What to buy as replacement to 2020 X5
Trying to Decide what to purchase since I have owned two BMW X5’s that both were rear ended / totaled 12 months apart from each other.
My first one was a 2019 and then it’s replacement was a loaded 2020. While the X5 was a great vehicle it’s evident that the cost of repair is high enough that in a serious accident it will be totaled. What other vehicles in a 2021 version would be worth considering. I really liked the X5 But I don’t believe the 3rd one would be any different. What about 2021 Audi Q8 or a dated Infiniti QX80? My temporary rental is a 2020 Nissan Armada and it’s a comfortable ride. I would prefer a midsize SUV with 2 row seating. Prior to the X5 I had a couple of 7 series BMW’s and Audi A8L’s. I don’t need the size of the big vehicles anymore but would consider a 5 series. |

Why would a Q8 be any different regarding potential to be totaled?
In the class, we didn't find anything that felt as good as the X5.

My first choice would definitely be the X5 45e. But another interesting option could be the new 545e. Viewed from here in Northern Europe.

It’s ok to say you’re tired of the X5 and want a change though. That said if it’s cost of repair, then go down into VW, Nissan, etc category |

Depending on whether you have another nice vehicle for long road trips, you might consider going full electric with a Jaguar I-Pace. We have one and love it - an amazing car. 200-220 miles range depending on weather, driving style. In the US you can get some very good deals + the $7500 tax credit. The I-Pace is my primary vehicle and we ordered an X5 45e to replace my wife's Volvo XC90... giving us the ability to both drive electric around town, and still have the ability to take long trips without having to worry about charging in route.

Ok, you may have seen the Genesis GV80 post, we need a BMW owner to buy one and then report here with comparison findings between it and the G05. |

I would look at this in a different direction. You got in two recent wrecks with the G05 and walked away unharmed. Why wouldn't you NOT buy a third??? It drives great and is very safe. Any luxury vehicle will cost a lot to fix but who cares as long as its safe and rewarding to drive?? To me this is like replacing your well proven secret service agent after he saved you from a threat.

I also look at this differently. Would you rather be rear ended, walk away healthy and have your X5 totaled or be rear ended, walk away healthy and then have an X5 that had $20-30,000 of repairs made and be stuck with it?
It would likely never drive as well, the fit & finish would likely be sub par and lastly, your carfax would show that your car should have been totaled and you will get dinged at trade in/sale time. |

Skip the Defender for at least another year. See YouTube.
If you want an Armada - get the new one: https://www.autoblog.com/2020/12/08/...armada-debuts/ We have a Q7 - bascially same as Q8. Very dif from the X5. Escalade nice - NEVER buy a Caddy with that much new tech as a first model year. Cannot go wrong with the new M550i: Midsize - try this: I would just stay with an X5 - but that is me.

I also think staying with an X5 is a great option. 5 Series as well if you are thinking more sedan like. If staying 2 row SUV is ideal, you can always go with the Cayenne? More expensive but if you like the x5, you probably will like the Cayenne. Definitely drive the q8, it is good to compare against. The Escalade is a boat like the Armada, do you really want to go that way? Have you tried the lincoln Aviator if you want to go Domestic?

I would still go for another X5 with rear guardrails in your case. |

Either that or a bumper sticker which says:
If you can read this then its probably too late - rear ending my X5 makes YOUR insurance premium triple (this is my 3rd) |

I'm in a similar situation as my lease will be up in a year. We've decided the X5 is a bigger vehicle than we need. It's our 13th BMW so we are shopping other brands. I am leaning toward an E class wagon but the wife wants another SUV. She drives a 12 year old RX that has been trouble free and still drives like a new car. I'm not wild about the RX but you can't beat its reliability or resale. Also looking at a Q5 and the GLC. The AMG GLC43 is a strong contender but hard to find one that has an interior other than black. So many choices.
