Yeah, that G80/82 video gives me a headache, one of the worst promo videos IMO. But the Pennzoil one is really oil made (I mean well made )

If this is the “new” BMW image, I am either too educated, cool, rich or old to ever want to be associated with such a dorky unappealing brand image with a hideous new design. Seriously who does BMW think can afford these cars and what image do they want associated with their brand?? Because it sure isn’t luxury or performance. How arrogant and sanctimonious of them to “dare you” to have your own opinions as if what we buy isn’t the most important opinion in the end. No one is buying that turd on a dare they might like it.

Marketing ads have surely changed and maybe the younger gens get it and like it. Have you seen the Toyota Camry TV ads, they certainly aren't what they use to be. . |

BMW use to still do this but with the sexy/funny adds as well as racing/performance clips that would cross over to BMW’s entire demographic. BMW is now crossing over into very specific social identity advertising that is like hitting a moving target of a very small demographic. The flip side it is not universally appealing and more important, offputting if you’re outside that particular minute demographic. Ideally, looking and appearing youthful is always in style in advertising as long as the youthful image you are projecting isn’t a bunch of offputting idiots.

I must be too as I am knocking on the 50yr old door soon even though I feel like I am still in my early 30s. I played these two BMW commercials to my my kids in grade school and they found the commercials disturbing/scary.

BMW needs to hire new statisticians. 16-30 = 8+%. After that, their brains grow in. |

Anecdotal, sure.... but I truly can't imagine anyone other than MAYBE 16 year olds finding these ads relevant. And they typically can't exactly afford BMW's.

Yeah I don't have an issue with BMW marketing to younger audiences.... But this whole "even bad press is good press" approach that BMW seems to be taking with these ridiculous marketing snafus REALLY cheapens the brand, especially when you're talking about a luxury brand that doesn't exactly sell cheap cars.

All our comments are about the ads, what about the design styling on these? I just find it hard to look at them, like looking at a buck toothed beaver

Yeah the iX definitely isn't my cup of tea..... I don't mind the G80/82 though. They're not "pretty", but I think the grill works better on those.

Styling is really bad on so many design levels. I am not scared of new but these are not a look I will ever warm up to. That said, my dealer has the same first M440i 2 cars on the lot after over 3 months. That is the kiss of death for a all new model. If you cant sell these cars now that they are brand new and fresh, when will they ever sell?? These cars are even in a good spec and color.

Here is the design review by the original X5 designer, I think he got many points correctly:

iX exterior design is the worst than any BMW I can think off. I would replace whoever approved this with a golden handshake - immediately without hesitation. Even the Bangle Butt is better in comparison. iX exterior is simply tasteless!

Oh yea and here is where we need to put this new design in proper context. We are way beyond critiquing if a larger grille works or not. That is minor in comparison to the design changes BMW is moving into. Hell, I would love to be only mildly disappointed in a new headlight, exhaust tip, or bumper. This is watching a train wreck in slow motion. Decades ago as a Porsche/Audi fan, we laughed and laughed at the designs from Bangle destroying a very aggressive and established BMW look. No one (including press) could believe they would voluntarily depart from such a signature and universally liked design to this new Bangle innovation. That will be minor if BMW pushes this new design across the entire platform. Audi and MB is watching from the sidelines just waiting for the new influx as they did decades ago. You can thank Bangle for the beautiful Audi designs and upshift in the Audi market decades ago. That wasn't a coincident in its timing.
