has anyone tested how far the 40i will go when the fuel level is 0%?

I'm currently at 0% and the gas station is 2 miles away. How much reserve fuel does the vehicle keep after you get to "0" on the gauges?

edit: according to @iconoclast there is little if any (0.4 gal) reserve on the g05. when you're at 0% you're all but out of fuel.

I thought all modern vehicles had a buffer of a couple of gallons after you reach zero on the electronic gauge?

I think thereef510 is correct. There's at least a few % buffers. 2 miles should be fine.

One thing you don't really want to do on many modern BMW ICE vehicles is actually run out of fuel. The fuel pump uses fuel as the lubricant and for cooling if the design is similar to previous versions.

When you fill it back up again, see how much fuel it actually takes, then you'll have a better idea of how much was really left.

Just from multiple fill ups and estimated remaining fuel compared to the gauge, I'd guess a gallon or so reserve, max (20+-ish miles), from a 21.9 USG total capacity. Depending, of course, on how long the needle has actually been on 0....

My experience is that when BMWs say they’re out of gas, they’re very close. Japanese cars have a much larger buffer.

I have been at home so thank you for your concern lol. There's a large chain of grocery stores in the south called Kroger that gives you fuel points when you buy stuff at their store. The discount is up to 35 gallons so we take two cars to get gas at one time. I've been trying to time it perfectly as to get the full amount but I'm now at 0% on the g05; i figured it was a good opportunity to ask how much of a buffer I have, if any. I guess we'll find out tomorrow if I made it or not.

I remember the older BMW models when it hits the red mark that is your buffer... Not sure on the newer models.. Keep us posted and good luck. LOL

It will go from 0 miles to --. Once you're on -- you're on the very last gallon and most likely below a gallon in the tank. Gallon will yield mileage differently depending on drive mode, type of driving, and which accessories are on. That being said your vehicle may stall if the grade or angle of the vehicle is steep enough to move the fuel away from the pump.

Okay update: I was able to get gas in my car today. I wasn't able to ascertain the capacity because I hit the 35 gallon limit on both cars and the other one took 15 gallons before I could get to the g05. I got right around 20 gallons in it.

Fun fact: while the g05 is being refueled, the gauge cluster gives a real time fuel range update as the tank fills.

twenty two gallons is completely full. if you refill at that level your tank will need twenty one gallons and if you're at the -- it should take nine tenths more fuel to fill up.

after ~20 gallons, it is at 89% full. for whatever reason the BMW app gives me a percentage, instead the # of gallons.

As jad03060 pointed out, modern BMWs dislike running out of gasoline. Getting a discount on a few extra gallons of gas may not offset the inconvenience and cost of replacing a burned-up fuel pump (especially post-warranty).

As one who avoids refueling until necessary, I can confidently run the remaining range down to 15 miles or so without fear of running dry. Anything much less than that can starve the vehicle of fuel if climbing a decent grade.

Just finished refilling today at what looked like exactly 50% on the gauge - exactly midway mark. Took 11.1 gallons, which would indicate there is no reserve, although I suspect there is some degree of "slop" (engineering term ) in the instrument cluster gauge, and the angle at which you view it. So my guess would be that at 0, you are fairly close to done. Enough to make me not rely on anything extra in the tank when it says "empty.".

welp, i guess I luckily avoided a landmine. I'll be sure to avoid that in the future. That's sort of crazy that with all these safety features, they didnt build in a 1 gallon buffer or so for fuel.

It starts warning you when you have 30 miles left in the tank so it probably figures that is enough of a buffer.

The Connected app will actually tell you how much fuel is left in the tank - saves guessing.

Could be, except that the tank capacity is listed as 21.9 USG, and after a fill up and driving a couple of miles the Connected app now says 20 gallons. So either 1. the tank doesn't really hold 22-ish gallons, 2. it didn't fill completely, 3. the app is wrong, or 4. I'm getting really crappy mileage on the stretch of road between the local station and my house. I'm guessing 2 for lack of a better explanation, but I'm not really sure I trust the precision of the app.

I've noticed this effect as well, so let's add theory 5) the difference between rated tank capacity and maximum value shown in Connected App **IS** the fuel reserve. I think it's 5.
