With a "total" range of only 400 miles. It's a little shorter than I'm used to, but the electric only part makes it totally worth it. Most people rarely "need" that full 400 range. It's just that I drive from one end of the state to the other to visit family and it's right around 400 miles. I prefer not to stop (so kids don't wake up), but will probably have to with this car as the last bit is through mountains and I don't wanna run out of gas there. The 40i 6 cylinder has about a 480 mile range, which is more in line with what I'm used to.

On the first such test drive, bring a couple of extra fuel canisters (filled, obviously) as backup instead of stopping. X5 fuel efficiency has a massive range depending on drive mode, drive style, and conditions — it might be enough after all. I've seen 1000km (620 miles) range estimate once under specific ideal conditions on x40i — you won't get that on 45e in the mountains and in the winter, but perhaps 500 miles is not completely out of the question.

In my experience, in highway conditions the effective range is about 650-700 km, right around the 400-425 range. So your driving style, highway/b-road mix, stress level at lower fuel levels, ... will determine wether you will make it.

In my range calculation I took a range of 50 km (around 30 miles) into account, which should be doable even with US capacity as you should be able to regenerate some mls.

On the other hand, if you go up in the mountains at the end, consumption may go up...

Did a round trip from SF -> Sugar Bowl on a single tank the day after I got the car. There was no initial charge on the battery, so the entire trip was done on ICE. Total distance driven was 366 miles, most of which was done at 80mph. Range was down to 12mi when I got home.

Oh wow, that's actually incredibly useful data point for me to have. Sugar Bowl is the resort I prefer going to so I'm very familiar with the terrain. And that's less mountain travel than the trip I was asking about earlier (going through the Grapevine going up/down California).

How did the X5 handle snow? What tires do you have on? Mine has the 21" Summer so I'm pretty nervous as I've never had summer tires before. I mean, the way to Sugar Bowl is basically all paved (I won't go if it's snowing on the 80), but the parking lot can freeze over during the day. I've gotten stuck in my Odyssey once, but on that day, the only cars that got stuck were other Odysseys of various generations so I'm assuming it's just that Odysseys suck in the slightest bit of snow/ice.

I have the 20" OEM Bridgestone Alenzas (All-Season). Roads were dry, parking lot was snow/ice. Tires were fine for that application but would want true winters or AllWeathers at a minimum for anything worse.

Do not take your summer tires where it is cold enough for there to be snow on the ground. They are not made for below freezing temperatures and can easily crack/require immediate replacement.

As mentioned in other threads, I am a big fan of smaller diameter square set-ups. You loose out on some of the looks and extreme performance; but there are more tire options, ride smoother/quieter, less expensive, more resistant to road damage, can be rotated, and so on.

Yes, my wife and I are currently at an impasse. She likes the looks of the 21" we have. I prefer going square b/c I'm the one who has to deal with tire replacements, etc.

Practicality vs. Looks is debatable but Safety wins every time. You already have the 21" rims but it is not safe to drive them as currently set-up in winter conditions. 19" or 20" rims with winter tires would be the best option if you have space to store the alternates. Other option would be to sell the 21's and put Michelin CrossClimate SUV on a set of square 20's.

Edit: My dislike of staggered set-ups comes from my old E55 which consumed tires like no other car I've had. Fronts would wear unevenly due to the camber and rears from my right foot. $1200 in rubber every 8-12k miles at best... more often than not a pothole encounter would require earlier replacement.

discussing with Fennario helped me decide to switch my staggered 21" to a square 20" setup BUT someone did mention you may have an easier time to buy one tire size that can accommodate both 21x9.5 and 21x10.5 widths. still won't be able to rotate normally, though.

I'm interested in the details of that. No room to store (Bay Area so space is a premium). If these tires wear at 12k miles, I'll have a pretty good argument to convince her to pick out a set of aftermarket 20s she likes (she does want all black rims) so I can go square. For some reason, she HATED the 20" factory options. They looked fine to me, but happy wife, happy life.

what do you want to know? I purchased matte black Rohana 20x9 ET27 all around wrapped in Bridgestone Alenza 275/45R20 all-season run flats (45e has no space saver spare). If u have M sport brakes, make sure the wheels clear the calipers.

and since this thread is about tank capacity, the 20" square setup may provide better fuel range to the next fuel station for the next time someone empties their tank to zero (gotta keep it relevant) 😜

Oh I was wondering what that tire was that will fit the 21x9.5 as well as the 21x10.5. I'm also wondering if that will help with gas mileage. Hey, every bit helps.

most tires will post their accepted rim width range. my 20" tires accept rims with 8.5-10.5" widths. if you stay with your 21" rims, the 21" version of these tires 285/45R21 accepts 9-10.5" widths (though the different diameters will throw the speedo/tacho off a bit so this 21" tire is no good for the G05).

because I also wanted all black rims and all-season RFTs, it was more cost effective for me to get 20" square rims + new tires instead of powder coating my stock 21" rims and new A/S RFTs for them.
