Exclamation Problem retrofitting crystal shift knob

Ordered genuine bmw crystal shift knob part#61319475056 and crystal start stop button part#61319475063 and tried to fit it on my G05 X5. Couldnt put the car into gear afterwards and the start stop button wont fit too, anyone experienced this situation too?

The shifter should work but you will need to VO Code 4A2 to get the lights to work. The start/stop button will not fit your controller. Car Analysis Inc makes one that fits well. They have a cheap way to change your idrive controller as well

https://www.car-analysis.com/BMW-Cry...5-X6-X7-Z4.htm

When my dealer installed my shifter they nicked the cable and ended up having to change the entire control unit.

It sounds like the ribbon cable isn't lined up correctly. Double check that the cable is laying flat and that the cable stay is snapped in correctly. It's delicate and finicky.

I had the same issue with the start/stop. The design is different. I ordered from car analysis rather then trying to get the entire start/stop mechanism out and installed into my X5.

Good luck!

Did you disconnect your car battery before changing the shift knob? I am not sure if that matters or not.....

He means the ribbon cable that you have to attach to the shifter coming out of the control unit. If that is not lined up perfectly then the shifter will not operate as intended.

Here are some good videos (from car-analysis) on the shifter install. You MUST disconnect the batteries before this install. One under the hood on the passenger side and one under he floor in the rear cargo compartment (trunk).

Are you getting any alerts when you try to change gears? I didn't disconnect my battery and I killed the entire center controller.

Has anyone who's retrofitted and VA programed the crystal controls received an OTA update?

I am looking to prove it disprove my theory that VA coding and it retrofitting prevents OTA updates. I can't figure out why my X5 hasn't had a single update OTA.

Does anyone know if you can replace the entire shifter module with an M version module? I understand the shifter itself is not compatible, but what about the whole thing?

How is the quality of the Car Analysis products? I'd like to add the crystal items to my wife's new M50i. It's one option she wished we could've found.

What was the end result to retrofitting the glass shifter knob

Hello fellow Bimmer enthusiast.

Did you have a successful end result with everything working?

I ask because I just purchased an OEM glass shifter for my 2020 BMW X6 M50i online from an official BMW parts store and I had my local BMW dealer do the install. They also encountered a similar issue that was mentioned in this post where the car wouldn’t go into park. According to my service advisor the techs there never did that job before and that during the installation part of the shifter’s control panel had been fried/shorted and that they had to replace the control panel part that was fried and they did cover that. The end result was that they successfully installed the glass shifter knob I purchased but the only thing not working is the “X” symbol, it will not light up.

They eventually told me that to get the “X” symbol to light up I needed to buy an additional 4 parts attached to the shifter panel, the parts came out to approximately $3,700 not including labor

So for now I’m stuck driving it without the “X” light symbol feature not working until I can solidify what’s needed to make it work

I honestly don’t feel totally convinced that I need all those other parts just to make the “X” symbol light up.

So I’m curious to know if at the end you were successfully able to have your glass upgrade installed and if so did you need to buy additional parts to make it work?

Although I do not have personal experience with it, I’ve done extensive research on the offerings. It appears that the iDrive controller and the start/stop button will sit slightly taller. Make sure to disconnect both of the batteries if you decide on this mod as there have been many posts about fried center consoles.
