Paint Worn Off Is This A Warranty Claim? ** UPDATE **

Hi all,

When I was giving my 2022 X5 40i a wash earlier on today I noticed that some of the matt black paint around where the exhaust tip is has worn off and the silver underneath is showing through ( see attached photo )

My X5 isn't even 1 year old yet and it's only done 2,426 miles.

I am in the UK.

Is this a warranty claim?

A number of folks have had them replaced under warranty, it is wort a try. In just ignored mine given it would likely happen again.

I had mine replaced under warranty, and now the replacement looks like below, after 1 year. My dealer will be replacing again under warranty, this time with the updated part, which is no longer flat black on the inside. They replace them in pairs so both sides match. Both times, my dealer didn't flinch, and just ordered the parts under warranty. The LCI X5 M-sport with extended shadowline have these revised outlets, and the inside portions are now unpainted.

** UPDATE **

I went to the dealership today and yes the flaking paint is covered under warranty pending a visual inspection ( the service guy just looked at the photos on my tablet ) and a, as he put it, a 'box ticking exercise'

He said they'll replace both sides with the latest part numbers.

Be forewarned that the latest part is galvanized steel (or stainless steel) and is not painted. So it is no longer black.

There are some high-temp black paints out there (a few for grills). I wonder if one of those would do the trick.

You'd just have to prepare the surface properly.

FYI. .. Most high temp paints I've seen require heating the thing you've painted with it to around 400 - 500 degrees before they become high temp tolerant themselves. Disappointing when I found out, which of course was after I bought them and was about to paint and started reading the fine print My wife put the no-no on using our BBQ grill to do it and a friend of mine who has an oven in his garage did the same

Oh well. Do you think the new metal replacements could handle the heat, even if the plastic ones we have now can't?

Well, 500F isn't much for metal but it would certainly be an experiment. I don't recall how long the paint needs to be baked, half hour maybe, it says it on the can though. I don't think the exhaust bezels actually see much heat so probably ordinary paint would be ok. The most important part is as you said in your post, that is.. . part preparation. Proper preparation when it comes to painting is everything! The parts need cleaned, then possibly sanded with fine grit, then cleaned again and then degreased. Certain easy enough to do but many people skip the proper cleaning and then end up with flaking paint and complain

I'd appreciate if someone can post a picture of the new updated replacement part. I never asked the dealer since I also thought it would just repeat so didn't see the point.

I just got mine replaced about 3 months ago. I was going to paint it black but it grew on me after a while and don’t mind it anymore.

To be sure I understand, are you saying just the tip?

Hey, so I have the Maxton design rear diffuser for the F95. I have a trailer hitch so I gave up looking for a diffuser made for this option, since there’s really not a whole lot out there. On a hunch I looked at the set up of this one and figured I could make it work, so I custom installed it.

I have these new tips on my ‘23 45e. Since my car is carbon black with the shadow line trim and I also have black wheels, the silver inner trim bugged me as it was an eyesore on a blacked out vehicle. So I ended up painting them instead. Looks soooo much better IMO.

That looks so much better, what kind of paint did you use?

+1 as well.

Sigh……..I painted mine with plasidip on the outer rim(chrome part) and was trying to replace the inner part where the paint fell off, the dealer wouldn’t do it, they say because I paint the outer rim therefore is no longer cover under the warranty.

I used VHT “very high temp” spray that I got from a buddy of mine who used it on his X5 inner exhaust trim and also on the headers / exhaust for his motorcycle. I did a few passes on my trim and went through what was left in the can. He was adamant about following the prep and curing process and said he hasn’t seen any peeling / flaking, or rust on his motorcycle exhaust or the inner trim of his X5 to date (pics below are of his X5, it's been over a year since he did it). Only time will tell if I did a good enough job on mine too

You can buy the stuff at autozone or similar auto shops.
