LCI 2024 X5 40i Thoughts After 3K Miles (From 20 Times X5 Owner)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I have owned way too many X5s over the years (around 20). Bad hobby!

I traded my 2022 45e in for a 2024 40i. I've owned 40i and 50i X5s in the past (plus previous generation 35, etc)

I love playing with the latest and didn't like the electric only power of the 45e or the luxury seats, so took a shot at the new 40i.

My 2024 is an Alpine White M-Sport with Coffee Sensafin interior.

Likes

1. Sensafin has really surprised me. I really like it, first time I have had it and I do not miss leather.
2. Glad to have the HK back, like it better than the base system I had from the pandemic even with mods done
3. Parts of the external refresh look nice, the black on the front is iffy and maybe a little too Kia like. Either way, many positive comments from others on the look
4. Prefer the overall drive of the 40i. It is obviously lighter than the 45e but I prefer this suspension over the 45e air suspension.
5. Voice recognition is very good.
6. Seats, love the base sport seats. For me much nicer than the luxury seats in comfort.

Dislikes/Issues

1. iDrive 8. Hate it. I fiddle with the A/C fan speed and it is a pain. Even changing the temp requires a pretty exact press which is hard while driving, especially on bumpy roads. Voice recognition is good - but I do not talk to my car when I have passenger(s). Radio presets up/down on the steering wheel do not always work.
2. Stop/Start. Terrible since it impacts the A/C. It has been around 90 here the last few days and the A/C is not as powerful when the engine stops (not an issue with the 45e). Also the stop/start shudders when the car is sitting still.
3. Engine updates. Engine has a bit of a raspy sound when just started in the morning. It is fine once warmed up, but not what I am used to with BMW engines.

Curious on other thoughts. I may switch sometime to a 50e just because of the start/stop issues.

Thanks for sharing, as per auto stop/start, it supposes not stop if desired AC temp not reached.

However, I did see others mentioning about setting driving mode to sport or modify sport individual config to turn it off without having to spend money coding it off.

Can the auto start stop be coded to remember the last set value? I did this for my 2018 X3

I have same issue with the engine on my LCI. That’s my only complain. I thought it only happened on my car which I could expect as it was one of the first production cars. It seems like it is just what it is on the LCI.

Sadly coding is not an option on the LCI. I used to code start stop off in the past.

The AC claims to maintain temperature but it does not feel like it and the fan slows down. I end up hitting Sport to start the engine.

Driving in sport mode disables A.S.S.. However, if you configure sport individual to have engine run in comfort mode, A.S.S. still kicks in.

That's not possible on LCI. There is not even button or menu to turn off the A.S.S..

I read it the same way, but I think the OP is saying he/she has been driving X5's for 20 years, not driven 20 X5's haha. This is useful information though. I am considering buying one and wanted to save myself 2K by going with the sensafin seats... everyone seems to really like them, so I'm not going to bother with the merino leather.

edit: i stand corrected! you should be an ambassador for the X5 model

Yes, 20 of them. Usually trade them in around 9 months.

Bad hobby.

I agree with nearly everything you said (especially under the dislikes) but the radio presets can be cycled by pressing the < and > arrows on the right side of the steering wheel. Much easier/faster than using the up/down scroll, which also requires a click to "take" the selection.

In my opinion, the entire right side of the steering wheel is poorly laid out. I think I'd prefer:

Scroll wheel = volume up/down (click to mute, long press to mimic current behavior where you can change the source using < and >)

-/+ buttons = cycles through HUD displays unless you've pressed the menu/content button, then -/+ does what the scroll wheel currently does

< > buttons = cycles through presets/tracks/etc. (same as now)

I don’t understand why BMW didn’t put their new steering wheel (used in 7 series, new 5 series) in X5 LCI. It is designed for iDrive 8 and has a much better lay out of buttons and wheels. Its a missed opportunity

Thanks for the writeup. Interesting to see the differences. Why didn't you just go for the 50e instead of teh 40i?

The radio buttons stop working. I know which buttons to press on the steering wheel, they just will stop working. Ditto for the buttons above the cup holders.

50e had different options required. At the time I ordered I could not get the X5 equipped right. That has since changed. Also the 50e price was a big jump from the 45e and I do not qualify for any tax credits.

I'd like to drive a 50e on a freeway to see if it solves the issues I had with the 45e.

Totally agree, I like the new design better than current one. it is a miss especially after the entire dash has been redesigned in LCI.

This is a good thread. I am curious if the lousy ASS function on the X3 and X5 30 and 40i’s is one of the main reasons people are choosing EV’s… 45e / 50e etc.

Jen4BMW definitely not.
The people on this forum is such a minority opinion. I’d argue that 95%+ of people who purchase these vehicles couldn’t care less.

Either way, hybrids have been gaining rapid popularity, especially in the last 4-5 years.
