Steering wheel groan when positioning

When I turn the car (45e) on and the wheel is lowering into position it makes a grunting/groaning sound. Seems like it only happens when the interior is hot (i.e., not when the car is preconditioned). Has anyone else had this issue?

This started happening after about a year of ownership. Only at startup as the wheel extended and lowered into position. No sounds any other time. The weather and temperature didn't seem to matter.

I couldn't find any helpful posts about it. Just as I was about the schedule a service visit, it stopped. This was about three weeks ago. It was about the time my iDrive updated. I don't know if they were related but it hasn't occurred since.

Same here as well, happened randomly since about 6 months into ownership. Random enough I don’t detect any patterns yet.

there is an SIB for this. it happened on my wife’s MY20 G30 also only when it was really hot. I believe there were some that got the steering wheel column fixed or replaced on their G05 under warranty. try doing a forum search

I had the similar issue, but the noise appeared when steering wheel is extending, not lowering. Replicated about every fifth start or stop of the engine. Seems to be a common issue for g05. The dealership confirmed the problem and replaced steering wheel column. No noise since then.

I tried, but I must admit that my experience with the search function on this board is checkered at best.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

Not just yours Try using the advanced search as I think it can be a bit more accurate otherwise the results bring up stuff with seemingly no relation to your search and you spend a lot of time sifting through it all till your frustration level triggers the...oh crap, forget it, emotion

This has been an ongoing with BMW. My 2020 started doing it after a year. I brought it in and the dealer replaced the whole steering column.

Here's one of the SIBs for the groaning noise in the steering column.

If I go to the dealer and tell them it was groaning a month ago but it hasn't happened since, what's gonna happen?

Mine only does it when extending and the car has been sitting out in the sun. Even then, it doesn't happen all the time. And of course every time I've told the dealer, they say they can't replicate it. So now they've asked me to take a video.

Well, at least your wheel is still moving. My steering wheel will go up, but not down. Well, it will eventually, but I have to keep hitting the switch. It will only move down a fraction of an inch each each time.

Very frustrating. I would be happy if it just stayed in one position.

Honestly I would too. I can't say that I have ever had a problem getting in or out of a (non-sports) car because of the steering wheel. Just more things to break.

Take a video of it happening and take it to your SA. My MY20 x5 started making shrieking noise when the column was moving in and out and the dealer attempted the SIB but the noise returned so they ended up replacing the steering column under warranty at 30k miles.

Mine started making the sound- I found a small spray from called Ozium- freshens air. Sprayed in area it was groaning and quieted it. Rather than silicone or a real spray. Problem is definitely some material rubbing.

Hi
I Had 7 X5s all had same issue, starts with intermittent issue and progresses, initially dealers just lubracate, but after 3 visits they actually do some thing.
I on my third visit it’s been resolved for about 3 weeks and it’s back!
I be booking it in again for the column replacement!
Good luck!

This exact issue under the exact same conditions just started happening to me four years into ownership on my 2019 40i — ugh. Guess I’ll take it in soon because my warranty is up in two weeks.
