X5 Glass

In the US does the x5 have better thermally insulated glass compared to less models? I know they did away with this add on a few years back? I believe x7 has it stated as a feature still? Just wondering if an x5 glass is then no better than an x3 or even lesser models?

Thanks

I have never heard of difference in the glass for any model in regards to being thermally insulated. Are you maybe referring to acoustic glass? That was an option on the X5 and is standard on the X7.

Yea I guess so. going off memory I thought it said both acoustic and thermal.

So the acoustic glass offers no heat reduction benefits?

I have not seen that it does but given there is two layers of glass with a film in between them it may reduce heat a bit.

Would assume that too. But not on x5 anymore anyways.

For what it's worth --- My 2020 X5 came with the acoustic glass. I also had the front windows tinted to match the rear door windows. I also added the clear tint on the windshield. I cannot tell you how big of a difference the clear tint on the windshield makes. Drastic reduction in heat and glare. In the Texas summers it is night and day when I'm riding with a friend that doesn't have the windshield clear tint. Also helps with UVA (aging) and UVB (burning).

Two weeks ago someone tried to break into my car by hitting the passenger side window 5 times with what I'm guessing was one of those escape tools. It cracked the first layer of the acoustic glass but it did not break the second layer so they were unable to get in. Insurance and the BMW dealership were a pain to work with so I ended up using Satellite and getting non-bmw acoustic glass. I was SO nervous to work with Safelite because of the horrible reviews on this forum and also on my nearest location's google reviews. They did a fantastic job and it only took about 30 minutes. The price difference at Safelite of the acoustic glass (laminated) and the regular glass was only about $20.

The dealership quoted me $1,562.65. Labor is $815.15 and parts $690.52
Total from Satellite was $413.92.

For that price difference, I can overlook not having the BMW logo on the glass.

So if you ever need your glass replaced I would suggest getting the laminated glass even if it didn't come that way from the factory.
