X5 45e Winter Battery Range in EV Mode
Hi All:
For those who are driving there 45e's in colder climates, what is the range you are getting in EV only mode on 45e ? Just wanted to check and see if it will work for me, since where I live we have temp hitting -15 to -20 for 2 months at least. TIA! |

I haven't encountered that low temperatures. In Belgium it is around 5 degrees. My range is between 60-65 km. If you pre condition you will be around 60 I think.

Not been too cold in the UK this winter either, but I have been getting an indicated 39-44 miles of range when fully charged overnight and if you have watched the HArry’s Garage review, you really do get the range that is shown

No real winter in Southern Finland either, first time in my life. So no freezing temperature test results to share. In the -3 to +3 degree morning temperature range that has been the norm here, my usual range is from 55 to 65 km.

For some reason I get only 50-55 km of range in pure electric. 5-10 degrees here in Belgium.
Seems like I am at the low end of the range... What's your avg kwh/100km? I get 42 more or less... |

Thank you everyone for sharing the range details.
Hoping someone living in in northern europe will chime in, since they probably have same temperature as Quebec, Canada |

Another quick question, does X5 45e have automatic pre-conditioning feature where it can be pre conditioned i.e. heated up (battery as well as the internals of the car)?
I have a covered garage but since it is not heated, in winter it can still be around -5 Celsius inside the garage. |

Mine quotes a range of 55 or so but i typically dont make it that far on electricity. (My default is full electric)
The quoted range doesnt matter much, the effective one is what counts for me. |

I always use precondition in the morning. Daily traject is 40 km. Less then 10 km highway. I use full electric mode. In the morning I mostly have under 30kw usage. In the evening 10 kw higher...
Overall average 33kw/100km. I mostly see 65km range but saw 75 also, see pictures, when it was 12 degrees C. Car is always outside.. 20" bmw winter wheels When I had longer highway trips I used sport mode to run in the ICE and prevent it from turning down. |

I am in the alps now. -12 C. Range 26 km with cold battery charged 52%.
Can't charge here. Only use the battery to pre heat the cabin in the morning. I drive in battery hold to keep as much battery as possible. Fuel consumption is 14,5 l/100 km. Not representative at all for my normal driving at home where I charge as much as I can an drive electric all week and ICE in the weekend. |

Some more stats:
1. I am pretty high up (just over 60 deg North), but no real winter this year so no stats for -20 degrees C. 2. My consumption has mostly been close to 40, sometimes at best below 30 kW/100km; these numbers are in the -3 to +3 degree C temperature range. Note that these can be directly calculated from the 21 kWh capacity and observed kilometer range. 3. I use preheating daily with preset time and start with battery at 100% as the heating comes from the wallbox. 4. Preheating with battery is also fine and works even at less than 20% capacity at start -- previously some have suggested it needs to be at least 40-50% full. It uses maybe 5 to 10 % of max capacity, depending on how long you preheat. 5. I get decent results even with just a few minutes of heating, wallbox or battery. The air in the car is warm although the seats are still cold and need seat heating. |

Leave house preconditioned with full battery and do exactly 30km trip to work using 41-50% of battery depending on traffic / temperature which ties in with what the trip computer reports ~28-33 kW/100km. return trip is a little longer and higher usage seeing as the cabin is not up to temperature. |
