I literally bought the M2 because I thought it was a better Supra than the Supra.

(The old, MKIV Supra was a manual transmission, 2+2, with a twin turbo i-6)

The 4cyl model would be perfect with a manual. Good balance, the right amount of horsepower, lighter weight. ~$40k for that would honestly be a steal.

Seen my first one in the wild yesterday. Wasn't able to get a close look at it as it was going the other way...other than being stopped at opposing red-lights.

I like the BMW Z4 M40i better in appearance from what I could see.

Also it was a very fun car to drive on the track last year during my "M" driving experience.

The thing is, you can’t mention the six cylinder Supra and the 370z in the same sentence, because despite som on paper similarities, the Supra is both much nicer and much more capable.

But once we start talking about the 4-banger.... well the 370z is $30k makes 330ish hp and comes with a manual. It weighs a similar amount and yes, it’s much older and less sophisticated, but it still comes with a warranty, and will likely be more reliable anyway.

Not sure about the reliability part. I have a co-worker that had one and he had a fair bit of issues (transmission, clutch, oil consumption) not to mention mediocre Nissan build quality and it's not like it's a high tech car as it's all carryover from the first decade of this century. Nissan is the Chrysler of Japanese automakers offering cheap (price and quality) vehicles for the masses and reliability is always hit or miss.

I bought a 350Z new in 2006 and dailied it for 14 years. I maintained it, but it led a hard life too. Lots and lots of drifting along with a fair amount of time spent sideways on gravel roads.

Obviously my experiences, like your friends were anecdotal, but I think owning the car from new and actually performing maintenance on it meant that it held up pretty well IMHO. It wasn't perfect, but considering how hard I drove that thing, i was impressed with its durability.

The VQ35HR is not a great engine by today's standards, either IMO. I test drove a 370Z and the engine paled in comparison to the S54 in my Z4M despite being similar on paper. It's coarse, doesn't feel willing to rev, and doesn't have the torque of the turbocharged cars to make up for those deficiencies. The B48 4 cylinder is down on power but it's probably a nicer engine.

Since we're dreaming... $30k would be even better.

I agree. It’s unfortunate it will never see a manual.

Have you seen the interior of the 370Z? It's so fucking outdated no amount of money over 3 thousand dollars would have me in one of those things.

Haha yeah I agree. The problem is its not even a good old interior. There are some interiors of cars you look at and you obviously can tell its outdated, but at least it made sense for the time it was built. Adds to the character.

The 370z interior was pretty ugly even in 2009 when it came out, in my opinion of course.

Oh, its REAL ugly. But its got a lot more power, is 10 grand cheaper and has a manual.

Think of it this way, the cost of the nicer interior is $10,000 and 75 horsepower. Might be worth it for a lot of people. For others, i can imagine it might make them think twice.

That really isn't a good way to think about it though. Not only 370z is rated at the crank where as the Supra/other BMWs are underrated, that is just peak power and not power under the curve. Also the 4 cylinder Supra makes a lot more torque and weighs less than the 370z. This is why they the 4 cylinder Supra and 370z have similar 0-60 times and quarter mile times. Not that is matters but the 4 cylinder Supra has a lot better fuel economy as well.

So in real world applications the argument is actually just the cost of the nicer interior for $10,000.

It is, but historically speaking the Z and Supra have always been direct competitors so these conversations will exist nonetheless.
