Ah. Well, I wonder what Ed Deming would say about all this wrinkle funny-business ... maybe:

That brings back memories. Many years ago I used to teach TQM classes.

And I'd argue Deming is 100% on topic, especially variance and special cause vs common cause variation ... in back seat leather? EDIT: To be specific, common cause variation in things like leather, the newtons the leather tensioner is capable of accurately maintaining, the humidity of the factory, the conditions in shipping the leather, et al. EDIT2: Because cranking up the newtons on the ole leather tensioner, like anything, prolly has positives and negatives for both BMW & us ... i.e., sometimes the leather probably rips and/or fails tests more often which raises costs (and prices), and delays production. I'm purely speculating, but having worked on similar stuff before, I'd wager it's something like that ... marketing says crank up the tension!, ops says ok, but it's gonna slow things down and be more expensive ... it's all a balance. EDIT3: Hmmm ... I wonder if the lessening of wrinkle pics is due to dealer prep! Hmmmm ... it's be interesting if a new prep procedure is to spray & dry any wrinkly seats prior to delivery ... I wonder if any dealers could tell us? OR maybe they just started spraying the seats at the factory rather than crank up the tension since it's such an easy thing - spray all the seats after MFR & let them dry before install? ... that's a possibility too ...

Well, the few that have been posted here look too perfect for this to be done by dealers and I doubt the factory is doing anything, heck, they were happy shipping out the heavy uneven wrinkles. At the rate of production, it would be too time consuming and the variances within the process and the risks of ruining the leather are too great. I really like what I'm seeing in the 2021 rear seats so far, glad they changed their process to remove the wrinkles, my passengers should have the privilege of wrinkling the seats |

The happiness factor is important, glad you're happy. I don't recall reading any posts on any forum of owners who were complaining that their seats were smooth, wrinkle free, etc. This goes for any of the car make sites I frequent.

To be less boring and sad, FYI for anyone who wants their leather less baggy & "wrinkle-free", here's how:
✓ Warm distilled water + blow dryer on low A time-honored detailer technique to give any leather a tight fit if that's your preference. Example, start @ 3:15 Obvs this guy is using a steamer and heat gun, though that's a bit more advanced and one has to be very careful not to damage your seats with too much power that way - it's safer to just use warm-to-hot distilled water on a MF cloth (after cleaning of course!) and a blow dryer on low heat, low setting. It takes longer but it's pretty risk-free. Sometimes even plain old Sun works - maybe try a day's worth of Sun first if touching your car is scary. An even easier option is, after cleaning, get a clean MF damp w/ distilled water, microwave until steamy (~60 secs), then lay it over the baggy part for 2ish minutes, then remove and wipe dry. There will be an improvement right away, and after a few hours any wrinkles/bags should be gone. This also works for leather seat indentations be they from your ass, your dog's claws, your kid sat on a toy for a 2 hour road trip, a heavy object that sat on your seats overnight, or anything else that stretches your leather and/or leaves an indentation / outline in your leather. I've never used this technique for "baggy" leather on *my* cars because, IMO baggy is a feature not a bug, but I have used it probably 100 times on my cars and other's when they get indentations - e.g., a guy's wife wore jeans with rhinestoney things for 4 hours on a roadtrip and left large indentations on the passenger's seat. He freaked out, "they're RUINED!" - fixed it in about 3 minutes. Guys. Seriously. This is a minor cosmetic issue. It's like refusing delivery of your car because there's a mud on the bumper.

Unfortunately the wrinkly seats disappeared due to chip shortages, what a shame it has effected such a superb design statement.
