Anyone know why my Vin is "restricted" for key order?

Hello everyone! i recently bought a 2019 X5 40i and only came with one key, so i went to my local dealer two days ago and order another key, but i got a call from them this morning saying that "your vin number came back restricted so the key order won't go through with BMW" and the lady over the phone don't know why either and said she's been working with BMW representatives. Thanks in advance!

It means the vehicle was reported as stolen.

JK - I have never heard of that before, let us know what you find out.

Did you pay more than $200 for your 2019 X5? I’m starting there.

I will! I’m gonna call them tomorrow and see what happen! I went there the day I got my car register, I assume the dmv system didn’t update the info yet and bmw probably pull the info with the previous owners so it didn’t match with my drivers license and registration, that’s just my assumption but I’ll call tomorrow.

Called the dealer today, no updates, the lady still don’t know why the VIN is restricted for key orders, sucks that I paid $500 and can’t even get a key for the car I own!

If it was corporate lease would it show up on carfax? And what’s the difference between corporate vs personal lease?

Dealer just called me and said “the key department dosent have any info on my vin, that’s why key can’t be made yet and they are contacting BMW Germany on what to do next.” Let’s hope I can get my key without any issues!

Good luck and hopefully it doesn't take too long.

I'm guessing a corporate lease would want to control which employees have access to the vehicle (and when) by having a limited number of keys and preventing them being illegitimately copied.

If there's a missing key, you should have the car and existing key reprogrammed.

I'm not positive on the newer vehicles, but on my 2011, it could only support two fobs unless you bought an additional module, then it could handle up to four. With the advent of the NFC and digital keys, I do not know if there's an upper limit. As far as I know, all BMWs come with two fobs when new. Whenever I've lost a fob, I've had the dealer remove the lost one from the computer so that at least electronically, it would no longer work...I did not go to the expense of changing the physical locks. IMHO, a dealer should deliver your vehicle, even a used one, with two fobs...I would be very annoyed if he wanted me to pay for a second one that SHOULD have come with it, even a used vehicle.

Even though I never lost a key before, but I just rather have a second fob as back up in case something happens or fob got damaged!

Dealer told me they asked Germany and said the car have missing files, that’s why a new key can’t be produce, they told me Germany advise them to change out the lock set and control modules and gave me two new keys under some type of warranty, but my car is out of warranty already!
