I have an Escort radar detector and an extension (smart cord) for it (to turn off beeping) that can be separately mounted. I want to hard wire the detector and unsure where. Seems the fuse box is in the back of vehicle..(in prior cars I would just tap the fuse box). To be clear the wire that needs to connect to the fuse box is off the smart cord (that is usually mounted lower within hand reach) as the other plug on the smart cord goes into the detector so I cannot use a mirror power source.

Anyone know which wire (perhaps) I can tap into under the dash - one that would turn off the detector when the car is off. Or maybe there is a fuse there?

I found an old thread and did find a fuse box under glove box. Now I just need to find a fuse slot that is switched to tap into

why not wire to the rearview mirror using pins? just plug the pins in the wire connector ... very easy

I need to power from the wire on smart cord that is under dash with reach of driver. Other cord on smart cord is the jack that goes to detector. Detectord is mounted low on driver side.

I did tap into a bunch of fuses under passenger glove box... they all seem live all the time though... so I need to unplug detector by hand when I leave the car... unless I add some sort of switch, etc. or find switched fuse.

There is a fuse panel under the driver's dashboard. Pretty easy to get to by removing the panel under the steering wheel and/or the panel at the end of the dash when the driver door is open.

When you say they are live all the time, it's not a simple matter of checking when you turn the vehicle to "off" state. The circuits are under control of the energy management system. You will probably find that they will de-power some number of minutes after the car is buttoned up and left alone for a while.

I did tap each fuse while the car was off.... so figured since the detector powered up, it was not a switched fuse.

I did take down the panel under the dirver side too when I threaded the smart cord over to the passenger side fuse box. I didn't notice a fuse box but maybe i missed it. Do you know if there is a switched fuse there?

Maybe I wasn't clear or am not clear on what you mean by "the car was off". It is not enough for it to be off. Because of power management, you need to connect a meter to the fuse, close and lock the car, and come back and check in maybe an hour. I think you will find that the fuses are de-powered after that time in those conditions.

If you drop the panel under the steering wheel, there is a fuse panel at the outboard edge just forward of the OBD port. See photo below. I have a fuse tap there for my phone mount/charger. I'm pretty sure if I leave the car off for a while, it becomes de-powered.

This is on a 2023 X5 45e.

Thanks again.. I will plug in the detector and see f it is off later. As soon as I plugged it in (with no key nearby) it powered up - which i assumed means it is not on a switched fuse. But I will wait and see and maybe swap fuse spots if it stays on. I did notice that even without a key the dash lights up - but I did also have it on a charger

For a proper test, you need to approach the car without a key and not open or even touch the door handles.

Sorry to bother you, but I read in this post you were looking a year ago for electrical connection points in your BMW X5 xdrive 45e, at the bottom of the dashboard on the drivers left site, so in the front left fuse box as visual on the photo.
Got the same car and I'm also looking for 2 connections there: one with a constant power connection and an the other with ignition connected connection.
May I ask if and where you found those 2 connection points in the front left fuse box or how did you make the connections?

Ah I think i tapped a wire under passenger glove box. It was always "on" but i discovered a feature in my detector that turns it off after X minutes so I left it wired the way it was. Sorry could not be more helpful.

This is the fuse panel under the glovebox. Red represents switchable +, yellow is constant +. If your device has no power management (e.g. switchoff when voltage is below a certain level), I’d suggest connecting to the red +, to avoid draining your 12V battery.

BTW, these fuse seats were empty in my case, not sure what’s the situation with US vehicles.

Can anyone please give some best step-by-step instructions with pictures on how to hardware the Valentine V1 radar detector into the 2024 X5 such that if it was clipped to the driver's visor or suction cupped to the windshield up in that area, the wire could run easily into the overhead cluster where the lights and sunroof control are please? Or if anyone has a link to the existing information that would be really appreciated.
