I've never experienced that over tens of thousands of miles using Waze, most of them speeding.

I typically use Apple Maps for navigation but have Waze running as well (just running, no active navigation) when on longer trips, especially with lots of highways / interstates. It will announce upcoming police, hazards, etc just fine. As soon as it thinks I am above speed limit, it stops announcing police - but will still announce other hazards. Is there a setting for that maybe? I didn’t see that at first glance. It will still show small blue circles for police. |

Regardless of whether it’s actively navigating vs just open on the screen?

It doesn't need to be actively navigating. I always use iDrive nav and just have Waze open (but not displayed). It will announce all alerts, warnings, etc. You just need to open it once in CarPlay and it will stay open and work until you restart your phone.

You search it up on your phone (Google Map, Apple Map.. ), it will automatically appear in CarPlay on the same app. So much more convenient. With Apple Map, the Apple Watch would alert you with haptic. So I turn off all audio alert, and the apple watch would use haptic to inform you of upcoming turns, and you also have display in HUD and instrument cluster. For real time traffic and re-routing, CarPlay navigation is much better than BMW Navigation. And Google Map's ETA is shockingly accurate especially for long distance, while BMW's ETA is a forever changing goal post. BMW's navigation's graphics is like 10 years out of date, the area wasted by the "sky" in the perspective view is ridiculous. And the traffic indication on the route is not very clear either. There is a twisty highway I commute frequently, and I always check on the map to see upcoming slowed down traffic. BMW is too inaccurate to be of any use, and difficult to see. Google Map and Apple Map is much better in this area. |

Thanks - it’s definitely set to display and alert. I disabled the speedometer, maybe that has something to do with it 🤷‍♂️

It could be plus I think you mentioned running Apple Maps, perhaps that is effecting it. I'm just referring to either having BMW nav or no nav running.

when driving on trips, I wear my Apple Watch because of the haptic feedback. we just vacationed in Kauai, and whenever we drove to an unfamiliar address (which was often), I can’t tell you how many times the Watch haptic and directional arrows were better at telling me when to turn than my wife (who’s holding my iPhone) or the Maps voice guidance

if you mean HUD, you mainly get simple directional arrows when using Apple Maps. the BMW directions in the HUD are more detailed. |

In other posts, I thought I had read that Waze is like 80% as good on HUD as the BMW nav. There are some cases like multi-lane turns from a stop light where the HUD will only display one lane. But otherwise Waze works pretty well with HUD, and you get the advantage of Waze police/camera warnings on the main screen. Is that not correct?

I like Apple Maps because it tells you which lane to be in, but native maps show a map on the HUD that is super helpful. It would be cool if you could use both at the same time.

Edit: I do like the Apple Maps prompts (“Drive past this light and turn left at the next one” is so much more helpful than the “turn left in 900 feet” prompt from other navigation tools). |

So for those who prefer the BMW nav due to the better HUD implementation...what do you do on longer trips where WAZE et al are better at re-routing? Esp if you're driving alone and don't have someone else to run Waze.

I've user used *dualing maps* but Waze has been acting up on it's current app build on IOS. It will voice over alerts but no audio on navigation parts (exits, turns, any nav voice guidance). So I launched Apple Maps.
Interestingly enough, I had Apple Maps doing nav, HUD with Apple Maps, haptic and Waze also blurting out on speeding camera, etc. Not sure about this combo....I'm just a DINO. Waze has always led me on the best routes + alerts based on crowdsourced info |
