Look at the number of X40i sitting in this popular SF Bay area dealership and my guess is that the same would happen for X45e starting 2023, unless they get some credits.
So two sides discussion here

1. Economy side. in SF Bay, saving is minimal if without 7500 incentive. you need to spend about $2500 to get EVSE setup (assuming you don't DIY). 45e is about $1500 more than 40i option for option. So up front, 45e is say $4000 more. $/kWh here is high, so overall $/mile is very compatible to 40i at today's gas price. Very little reason to get 45e.

2. Non economy side (environmental, emotional, labral green movement ...) Here is why SF bay people buy EVs. it isn't about logical. it is about idealogy. We cannot reason.

Also adding another point of reference here for those on the west coast (SoCal) area hoping to take delivery by year end:

Placed order and modified an open BW33 allocation on 8/5. Official prod date of 8/19, flew through QC and dispatched from factory on 8/22. Hit KC on 8/28 and eventually reached San Bernadino VPC on 9/22.

Still haven't taken delivery yet as the vehicle has been sitting at VPC waiting on a truck to the dealer for 5 days now.

Personally, I am in the group NickJ described. If 45e didn't have the $7500, I am not sure if I would have bought. At least, it won't stand out in my choices.

I guess I can describe my demographic as parents need a family car, don't mind to pay for premium brand, but still want to get the most out of money, won't take minivan (wife in my case), 3 row (larger size) will be nice, but not necessary. Not sure how large this group is tho
Same boat here on all points

Ha! To be honest that is a factor in our decision as we commute quite a bit, so saving those 30-40 mins, plus stress of stop and go, sign us up!

HOV lane in CA has been a pay to use feature rather than for actual green energy vehicle or for car pool. Total defeat the purpose of HOV and becoming cash grab public ammunition. Entirely not the reason to spend more to get access. Because you will save more money by just paying for HOV usage

That depends where you are in CA.

Westside of LA I often use HOVs when driving around the greater LA area but there is only one route I ever use (if you take the 10 out to Palm Springs, but often time 60 through Riverside is faster anyway) that has the pay HOV lanes.

Because of the HOV access alone we usually drive my wife's 530e whenever we are going on freeways, and it is definitely a reason that we've ordered a 45e (to replace my ICE X3).

But then we also ordered a 45e a month or so ago (currently on a rail line somewhere between Kansas City and LA) to make sure we got the $7.5k credit before it all goes away at year end (for us at least).

Yes, it depend on the location for sure. From what I can see in SF Bay Area, highway HOV are slowly and steadily being converted to pay to use lanes. First was US101, then CA-237, I880, I680 .... Just matter of time all HOVs will be like that.

Found out a few days ago our X5 45e is built and going to Quality Control and from there it goes to a VPC and then to the dealer. Should be at the dealer in about 10 days. We placed the order in mid September.

Congratulations. It should be much quicker than that, there is no VPC involved. It will be trucked directly to your dealer in IL and it usually takes a day or two depending on where.

As an aside, BMW got rid of the VPC acronym years ago, there are now VDC's.

I'm not seeing any discounts on 45e's in LA. Seeing $2500 - $5k markups still and dealers not budging.

If you don't mind the drive, we found that Riverside and Ontario are not adding any markups.
