Finance Office Add-ons to avoid?

Upon delivery of your new X5, what extras does the BMW Finance Office attempt to sell you that you find unnecessary?

I am inclined to avoid extras regarding ceramic coating, wax,.... I have other people who can do it better for those purposes.

But...do they attempt to sell protections: undercarriage, anti-rust, tires/wheel projections .... numerous treatments that might plant seeds of fear that would cause you to add them when really they are not necessary? What do you avoid?

What can you do better yourself and what items do you find necessary other than the out the door price?

If you're a numbers person, very few of them make sense unless there's a special circumstance. The only one I'll bite on is the extended maintenance coverage for my M vehicles because the spark plug change alone makes it worth it.

Special circumstance example - if I lived in NY/NJ, I would take a much closer look at the wheel and tire protection. But even then, at the 2-4K they charge, you're much better off financially if you self insure.

Generally speaking you are almost always going to be better off self-insuring. I suppose if you do 100% of your maintenance at the dealer, then you can do the math to see if that makes sense to you. If you ever use an outside garage, even once, you've likely spent your savings. If you drive your cars 100,000+ miles, you might could consider it, but even then, you are likely overpaying. For example - if you have numerous warranty repairs, then honestly, you probably are better off financially getting rid of the vehicle around warranty expiration - but that is just my opinion. Some vehicles are problematic, some aren't. When you buy new, because of the warranty you get a bit of a free look at what is likely to occur. But YMMV.

Nearly everything outside of warranty, you are paying for convenience and at a higher rate. For example, window tint and protection - a reputable shop can usually get you better quality for the same or less money. But if you just want to pick up the car and it be done, then that's what you are paying for (in my opinion at least).

RecovR vehicle tracking device. You can locate your vehicle on the mybmw app so it's literally useless. I didn't get the window protection either. If I get a rock chip I'll call my insurance for that.

I did purchase the BMW ultimate care+ as it's cheaper to go that route. Brakes can be north of $1200 per axle, tuneups aren't cheap and inspections and oil changes add up too. What I did was pay for the ultimate care+ plan separately from my vehicle purchase so for roughly $3-5k depending on length of coverage, I'm not wasting money should it expire and you can always extend it. If you add it to your loan and it runs out, you have that extra $100 per month paying for something you can no longer use added to your loan amount. Simple math to me. On a 60 month loan that's $6000 and if your coverage ends before that your payment doesn't go down $100 per month.

It really is a personal preference and what kind of peace of mind you want.

I used to buy CPO BMWs with an extended warranty. I think I used it one out of four cars.

If you think about it, it's like betting at a casino. The odds are the money you pay them for extended warranties and such, they will win, as they are the house. They are going to change you to make money and you will likely (odds) not have to use those services. It doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but odds are they will be ahead in the deal.

I general, I self-insure and don’t go with the extras. Will I have to pay thousands for an out-of-warranty repair at some point, likely. But it is also more likely that repairs will occur after the milage and time periods in the coverages offered.

Newbie, here and a similar experience in terms of when costs will be incurred on an extended warranty. I'm awaiting delivery of a 2022 X 5 45e and with the integration of PHEV and ICE I'm considering an extended warranty. But up here in the great white north of Canada a 6 year/100K km warranty is around $5,000. Not chump change. And while it's not apples-to-apples, Lexus wants $3000 for comparable package on their RX 350/450 PHEV.

I said no to everything. I'll let you know if I am happy with that decision once I get hit with a few repair bills....
