G wagon resale value is impressive, and the obvious status symbol associated with the G wagon, however the X5M is truly an impressive machine, arguable one of the fastest production SUV's, and it's a relative sleeper compared to flashy alternatives like the G wagon.

Yes, G wagon can move but had the better driver. Afterwards, horsepower prevailed.

Love the comparison never the less.

I think my buddy paid a little over $100K for his G63 a few years ago. It was maybe 1-2 years used, so probably a 2015-2016 model. It was his wife's car and he only kept it like 2 years.

Maybe it's just the off-road segment? Broncos are going for $80K, and living in FL, 99% are not doing any serious off-reading that couldn't be done in an X5.
The new G's are completely different from the 15-16 ones. Ground-up new car, The W463A came out in 2018 and steering went from ball to rack, the axles went from solid to independent and a bunch of other things, it drives very different than the old ones.

Then recently they updated the interior again to match the other MB's single screen look.

G wagons are just cool trucks no matter the price. We were at MB the other day looking at the GLS before finalizing on the X7 and my wife saw it and said what about that one I love it (not knowing the price). When she saw it she changed her mind.

G Wagens have a worldwide cult following. The huge demand and long waiting delivery times has resulted in resale values going up like crazy.

Given a choice, price notwithstanding, I would go for the G63, it's just so crazy looking.

These are all fair points and I agree with each one. However, my point was solely based on resale. I'd be crazy not to buy an asset in a normally depreciating asset class that turns around and appreciates 33% in a year after continued use.

This is contrasted with the X5M, which, like pretty much all M, AMG, and RS products, depreciates as fast as a falling meteor.

The Mercedes seems to 'red light' each race, but that's the nature of these things without real Christmas trees or starting lights. They are kind of silly truth be told given the lack of control around the start.

And I always wonder why the Mercedes seems to squat so much as it accelerates. It really goes nose up. Almost needs wheelie bars like a funny car. lol. The BMW always seems nice and flat under a launch.

Like others state, g wagon guy is a bit much.

car wise though, the G wagon did well but the x5M just continues to impress. when you actually drive one you are greeted with a constant grin on your face. car is a rocket

Price aside, the G63 is an amazing SUV. The new model (2019-presemt) are simply fantastic with exceptional ride quality. If not for the price, I'd pick one up for the wife and keep my X6MC. The race was unfair from the start, the X5M would win every time...a drag race isn't what the G-wagon is about though.

Not going to find a G wagon at retail for years.

Hard pass on a G wagon, as I associate with the Kardashian's in La La land LA.

G63 Edition 1 is my pick of the SUV lot. No BMW barge can hold a candle. Plus Merc nailed the update unlike LR with the disappointingly emasculated Defender. That front end is a travesty.

And this YouTuber is prototypical weird. It shows him post a video very publicly grieving the loss of a loved one and then in a couple of weeks his very next post is about picking up his dream daily? Hard pass.

This drag race finally became a reality: a designer crate with the price predictably exceeding its capabilities + mystique factor originating from military vehicle heritage ... vs X5M - a vehicle which delivers everything it promises at the predictably commensurate price.

All V8 engines are being used for the S Class launch so the waitlist and prices for The G Wagon will be impacted for years regardless of everything else going on. And as many said, it has a cult following, even more outside of the US. Check out Brabus for example, they build G Wagons bespoke interiors and add lots of engine modifications doubling or tripling the price and even they cannot keep up with demand.

From the way they are assembled to the demographic of buyers these cars are two worlds apart.

One is a mass produced horizontally and vertically stretched 5 series.

And the other is a bespoke SUV that's instantly recognizable. Even though it looks almost nothing like the rest of the Mercedes lineup and hasn't since it was introduced 40 years ago. It has a completely bespoke interior that you're not going to find anywhere else and a hand assembled engine. A cult following that was ready to burn down Mercedes HQ when word leaked that they were discontinuing the model.

If you don't see value in any of those things then the X5 is the car for you.

This so called cult also has access to warheads and rockets that go kabooley (aka gov-backed militaries) so burning down would be the least of Merc or Magna Steyr's worries. We are talking fallout zones. Don't mess!

Apologize to all those that own a G klass….
But I never understood why someone will spend that money on a dresser with a brick aerodynamic, a crappy and narrow interior and a weird ride o er a such evolved car which is the X5.
I mean, except cosmetics, that AMG is still a 70’s vehicle.
And the design is -in my opinion- old. Kind of like an old lady with botox; obvious due for retirement and long dated.

Did I mention they rust a lot?

With that money I buy two vehicles that are greater than this one…

Never been a fan of this box.

The G63 is impressive and awesome, and I used to love them… but now I just see a ton of tacky trophy wives driving them around. Ruined them for me… i'll take a jeep wrangler hemi over it tbh, more badass

A few points:
  • I don't have a problem with the host's excitement. If he wasn't this way, we would think it is incredibly boring. He is using the Matt Watson formula (even resembles him a little) which has been proven to work. Good for him.
  • The G-Wagon is a great looking SUV. It's appeal is DIFFERENT than that of the X5M. Some say it looks old - I don't agree. I think it's styling is timeless and legendary. I am a BMW FANBOY (yes, I admit) so I would never buy one, but they are definitely sexy and special.
  • In the video, it is clear the driver of the X5M PURPOSEFULLY gave the hit to the G-Wagon (probably to make it closer and prove their point)
  • The X5M still killed the G-Wagon, but they were so committed to their messaging that they still touted it as a close race. However, I am glad I watched this video. I now understand how Merc and Audi fans feel when videos are made by BMW fanboys. I don't mind those at all, but that is the side I'm on. This video flips the script and gives me new perspective. lol
  • Finally, I have a built F85 and a friend of mine has a built G-Wagon. I will share the results of our races and I will see if I can get video from him. Going into this, we both expected my F85 to beat him, but we did it anyhow. It was not even close. I would argue that in the video they hedged on the pedal in the X5M. I was car lengths in front of him by 60 mph and just continued to pull away. From rolling, it was worse. I left him at kick down.

In the end, I would not buy a G-Wagon for performance. That vehicle is just for flex and it is nice that it has a little bit of performance.

Strangely I'm a fan of both. We have an F95 and a friend recently bought (and subsequently sold) a pre-facelift G-Wagon. Looking at the newer updated G63 I have to agree with other posters that it's a timeless piece of machinery. My friends was a tank. Like Master P style. I can only imagine what the payment on it was, but I believe he sold it for close to what he paid. If the ADM wasn't so high I'd definitely cop one. Perhaps when the market (stocks and new cars) comes back down to reality I'll look into it. But $100K+ over for a new Merc!? That's gonna be a NO for me dawg.

Thank you, someone finally said something!! The first two races didn't even count, he got a good jump both times. It was hard to watch given that. But it was nice to see the X5M pull, especially on the top end.
