M60i has been at the detailer for a couple of weeks having some work done.

It’s brand new, has I think 40 miles on it - basically just me driving it to the detailer.

Today I sat in it at the shop and had alerts about low battery/replace battery.

I asked the detailer if they had any ideas and they were surprised - said nothing different had been done on their end from other vehicles. They handle many vehicles of course - they know what they’re doing.

Any ideas or guesses?

Has happened to many folks when getting PPF, Tinting, etc. The detailers keep the doors open and iDrive drains the battery. Most of the times all is well after driving or putting it on a charger/tender but a few got their battery replaced under warranty.

Happened to my M50i while it was at the detailer getting PPF and ceramic coating applied for a week. Message went away after driving it for about an hour and never came back. I probably didn't help things by checking on the car with the 360 view via my phone a few times since I just got the car and was worried about my new toy..

Just dropped it off at the dealer.

Ran a trickle charge for ~36 hours, and then drove it for about an hour this morning before the service appointment, hoping it’d go away.

No such luck. We’ll see what they say in a few hours hopefully.

Upside, got to meet the GM at my local shop who was checking out the vehicle when I came back from the restroom. Nice guy, lots of compliments in the vehicle, and seems very mod friendly. Was currently installing a Carismo wheel on an M5 for a “popular” YouTuber (not sure who).

Will report back with what I hear on the battery.

I have a '21 xDrive40i and I got the Starter Battery is Severely Drained message on my My BMW app. Took it to the dealer and they charged it back up and gave it back to me and said it should be good. I have since done two cycles using the CTEK charger and both times it went to Stage 7 overnight.

Hopefully yours is fine!

In terms of charging, I wasn’t sure which battery I have in this thing. My manual doesn’t say which one exactly, and I was curious if there’s an easy way to visually see - a giveaway of some sort.

I know some have 1 battery, some have 2, some have AGM, some do not. My understanding is it depends on some complex decision matrix of which options the vehicle is equipped with.

Is there an easier way to tell, like a character in the VIN, or a visual giveaway on the vehicle, etc?

Your main 12vdc battery is an AGM type. Select that when charging your vehicle.

All G05 X5's, perhaps all BMWs in general. use an AGM starter battery. You also have two batteries, the other is under the hood and is a 48v for the mild hybrid.

Depending on options, BMWs may have more than one battery, but the main one is, and has been coming from the factory with AGM types for over a decade.

It's kind of a pain to visually check as it's underneath the rear floor covering in a well. If you have something like BimmerCode or BimmerLink, you could see what is programmed into the logic, but given how BMW puts the alternator on a clutch and doesn't run it continuously would make something other than an AGM have a very short service life.

And for charging, I believe I want the one under the hood, using the positive battery terminal and ground on the chassis provided by BMW as indicated in the manual.

Use charger at these connection points in AGM mode.

Yes, using the under-hood connections is the correct way to charge your battery. and selecting AGM as the battery type.

The hood must be opened, but note that the 48vdc battery won't be recharged by a typical battery tender...that one won't get recharged unless the battery charger can produce >20A. It should not be necessary to recharge that one, but if for some reason it is depleted, you'd need a more robust charger to be attached.

You do not want to charge the battery under the hood but rather use the positive and negative terminals under the hood.
