Yes you will have to at least recalculate/code the ecu for the center stack if not others- if you did not do this removing the VO code does nothing.

I don’t doubt there’s more to it than what I did.

I’m going to give it another try tomorrow. I have a new coding tool coming.

Step 12 here if you did this then that’s it- if you did not it will have no effect.

UPDATE: Thanks for your help, everyone. I was able to get the touchscreen to work, essentially by removing 6UY from the VO and then coding the head-unit module. Better, still, this does seem to have made the Backup Assistant re-appear.

I will write up a tutorial in the next day or two.

Awesome!!! Great news. I guess the issue for many now will be where to get the part from. Will this void warranty or cause issues when servicing the car?

Great job.

I wonder why backup assistant is deleted if the functionality is all there? It's not reliant on the touchscreen, you can access it via the controller.

Have you tried backup assistant on your car? Does it work?

What fantastic news, congratulations and thank you for playing around and getting this to work. This gives hope to all the non-touch screen owners that they can go this route if needed.

I'm definitely doing the math in my head if this is worth doing. I decoded my vin last night and confirmed the deletion. I've got warranty concerns, but this could be an option.

In order to deny a warranty claim they would have to show that the changing of the screen and/or coding caused the problem you are having. That probably could only be done if you are actually having problems with the screen itself. Just keep the old and switch if needed.

Great stuff. Looking forward to see how you did it. Would certainly consider doing it myself.

This is completely untrue:

BMWNA can deny any warranty work (i.e., dealership service work reimbursement) at any time for any reason as there is no requirement BMWNA prove anything to anyone to deny warranty work, nor is BMWNA required to get any pre-approval to deny warranty reimbursement; like the touchscreen delete, they will just simply do it.

It's at that point - where BMWNA denies your warranty work - that your remedy as a customer is to sue BMWNA (and/or publicize it). During that lawsuit you'll have the opportunity to present your case (including Moss-Mag type arguments which will make your case worse frankly), but here are the problems with that:

(1.) To present your case you have to get to court first
That'll take awhile because BMWNA's attorneys will move for continuances over & over for years to "gather data". In the meantime, your car is your evidence so probably should sit idle so you can prove the exact state it was in for service.

(2.) BMWNA has all the engineers & the data
While you have almost nothing - you can hire professional witnesses, but that's pretty expensive for probably not much

(3.) Judges know Moss-Mag was designed for routine repairs
That is, the law was designed to prevent, say, GM from requiring an owner only using price-jacked "certified GM parts" for routine repairs, thus screwing them out of affordable transpo. People with BMWs doing touchscreen mods probably don't fall into that bucket and judges probably won't have much sympathy, but that's speculative

What you're doing is fantastic - and impressive! - but you're right to believe it does come with warranty risk.

If it's this easy, it's also disappointing BMWNA doesn't simply offer a retrofit.

Congratulations, anybody looking to add one of these touch screens you better buy one quickly. The market will figure out that people are buying them and raise the prices on them.

Have a 2019 X 6 who's lease is coming to and end. because of the low residual, planning on buying it and re selling it, to offset the MSRP of a 2022 that we just ordered. With this brilliant fix of the touchscreen issue, perhaps taking both cars to an expert ( when the new one arrives), and swapping screens; just maybe we could get the best of both worlds?, unless the 2019 would not take the 2022 non touch screen panel...

This info is priceless, thank you!!

IF it is really is the touchscreen swap only, then BMW should retrofit these period. Like, what happens if my touchscreen breaks? Did they buy MORE of the wrong touchscreen part just to keep me touchscreen free?

Just keep your $500 and give me what I paid for dammit.
