Talking 800 Miles Later . . .

Two weeks in, and just over 800 miles on my custom build Phytonic Blue w/Cognac 45e, and I’ll be as bold as saying it’s without a doubt the best SUV I’ve owned!
- Thanks to Flying Ace and GrussGott for early on help and feedback. As well as generally this forum for all the great info.
- Just drove to the mountains for the second time, handles everything with ease so far. Over 800 miles with nearly 200 on EV and the computer claims 31mpg average over the life…very impressive.
- After ordering our 45e, I sadly sold my 2013 X5 50i. While the 50i was high maintenance at times, it was an awesome vehicle with mountains of torque. I was initially concerned about missing the V8. And, while I miss the growl at times and perhaps the heavier steering or heavier metal doors/bodywork; the luxury, silky smooth drivetrain, and surprisingly very powerful 45e is without a doubt a well executed vehicle that rachètes up the level of luxury and modernizes the overall package significantly. The transition from EV to ICE is far better than all competition.
- I’ve been driving it a bit easy as to attempt to follow break in policy, and using sport a lot to get the ICE miles up to break in - though I know this is a debatable subject.
- I could say quite a bit, bottom line, if you are on the fence about buying one, just do it!

I have OEM Scorpion All Season M+S and so far, they have performed quite well in the snow. Its meant to snow a few feet this week, I’ll test more, but I’m pleasantly surprised how they feel..so long as you are driving smart…easy on the gas, etc.

Congrats!!! I just picked mine up today…it’s a twin of yours. PBlue/Cognac/MSport with shadowline. I’ll admit to being a bit nervous if cognac was the right choice, but after seeing it in person am very happy. It sets off the blue really well, imho. As my artistic son told me today…the orange-ish hue is a natural complement to blue on the color wheel.

Jpflo Yes, in person the combo is perfect IMO. Before I ordered, and even during order I'd see pics online that don't capture the true tones well and give it more orange hue. In person, it is softer and had more brown/tan hues. We love it.

Over 900 miles now, 100 in the mountain snow. Battery due dip quicker in the mountains, perhaps a combo of the snow/temp and the terrain. But, I've been impressed.

Yes, we are. I normally charge overnight with my Level 2 Chargepoint. We are in the mountain for 2 weeks and we do NOT have level 2 at the cabin, so this is a big test. I have now done two overnight charges with the OEM supplied 110 cord attached to the same volt extension cord and it's slow, as expected, but works. My car and cords are outsize in freezing temps. Last night's charge pumped in 18kwH and took just over 16 hours. Worked fine as we ski in the day and generally dont' move the car from the late afternoon onwards . . . so it's actually all working fine. The battery seems to drain a little quicker on pure EV perhaps due to the freezing temps and/or the mountain driving.

Any special extension cord needed?

That's awesome. I live 10 minutes from Lake Tahoe and will be taking a delivery in a month. Pretty excited to see how 45e works here. Great to see you're enjoying driving it in snow. Can't fkn wait.

I just ensured I had a weatherproof extention cord that also matched the OEM Specs for Amp and watts...nothing special.

Love the 45e!! I've been in N.Tahoe for nearly 2 weeks, it's been outside the entire time, and you know the storm series Tahoe just had. Generally its performing great. I am a touch disappointed with the battery in these temps...it takes a hit. That said, I'm only driving about 10 miles a day max so I am able to pretty much keep it in EV. I sometimes want the ICE to warm up, which is doable by tricking the car into thinking we are driving in ICE mode via Sport Drive then parking brake on (I wish there was a proper way to do this). Also engine goes to park and then off if I open the door...this is not ideal. But the 45e has been driving around in the storms and all and doing so with ease and comfort. I got stuck once so far, but backing into an unplowed road and getting high centered....I dug out the undercarriage. . . clearly user error here as I had a snow plow heaing my way and half blindly backing into a side street not realizing it had a burm and hadn't been cleared.

motherkin
I find the OEM Scorpion A/S M+S to be performing surprisingly well in the snow. As referance in my old X5 I have used both Scorpion "Winter" and Conti DWS 06 AS M+S. Car and tires are new, but it's my observation that the OEM A/S is pretty close to the "winter", and probably better performing than the Conti DWS06 (Mind you I am a big fan of the DWS 06 A/S in general). For occasional use, these OEM A/S tires are solid. It's also my experience that when 50% of the life of A/S tires is down, that snow/winter traction exponentially decreases....we'll see.

Details on the roof rack, and the box? Specific models? They look to be EXACTLY what I am looking for!

Thanks! Yes, Phytonic Blue was a no brainer for us....love it the color and it changes nicely based on lighting.

I researched the rack and roof box quite a bit with the goal of having both the more aerodynamic and aesthetically pleasing rack/box set-up for our skiing, camping and road trips:

- Thule Aeroblade Edge 7603b (I compared this to Wingbars and BMW OEM solution).
https://www.thule.com/en-us/roof-rac...-7603b-_-7603B

- Thule Motion XT APLINE (this roof box sacrifices vertical space for looks and aero - but works perfect for us - mostly skis winter, blankets, compact chairs, tent, etc. summer).
https://www.thule.com/en-us/cargo-ca...lpine-_-629506

Good luck - lmk is you have follow-up.

Some pics from the big snowstorm where the 45e was buried, us digging it out, etc. Overall performed well. OEM Tires and car did well in snow - got stuck once briefly by getting high centered backing into an unplowed snow drift/burm. Dug out the moved on. Lots of driving on relatively unplowed roads with 1-2 feet of fresh snow.
1300 Miles now - 400 on pure EV.

Thank you! Great details and great photos.

Does the sunroof work as it should? Is there TOO much wind noise? Any regrets?

The overall use case for us is the same -- Skis and lightweight camping gear.

Reminded me to pack a scraper, brush and a plow for my Tahoe trip this month, yikes

- Sunroof works as it should - though with the roofbox on it's pointless.
- "Too Much" is so subjective. With the cross bars only, excess wind noise is negligible. With the roofbox on, it is very apparent especially over 50mph - I don't think there's any way around this.
- No regrets. I've seen reviews that some people complaint that my roofbox has weak support arms prone to failure (you can cross shop Yakima choices - there is a very similar roofbox they offer too).... luckily, I have not had any issues. And I've had it for 4 years, it was also on my old X5. My only complaint is the Bloody Thule Locks freeze up sometimes and it take time to get the key to unlock them (when this occasionally occurs it is very frustrating - I might need to clean out the box...maybe dirt and grim is in the locking system but it seems to only happen in the freezing temps).
