Engine Break in Period (x40i)

The manual states keeping it under 4500rpm for the first 1200 miles. I called my local dealer's service department and was told to just drive it normally, there is no required break in unless its an M engine. I'm just curious why is there such a disparity between the manual and the info from the service department?

I've ignored my service department's recommendation on many things and have broken in all my BMWs since 2000 using the reference 1200mi, varying RPM (4500-5400 - no hard accelerations or redline) and speeds (below 80). Even if you bust it over 4500rpm - you're not breaking it.

Or you can bust out driving as you see fit if you're leasing.

Modern engines really don't require breaking in and they do test it during production.

I assume the instructions in the manual are the most cautious approach, and being so cautious won't do any harm.

But what the service dept. says is is probably going to result in no problems 99.9% of the time (i.e. less cautious, but unlikely to cause any issues in real life).

M engines require break-in service after 1200 miles. maybe your dealer assumes ICE break-in isn't required on non-M because no break-in service is required after 1200 miles. the way I look at it, BMW engineers recommend 1200-mile break-in regardless of needing break-in service, so I'ma go with the engineers on this one.

Good point, engineers>everyone else. So far holding steadfast at 350miles.
