Off-Roading X5 vs Explorer
Hello, I've been driving a new 2013 X3 for the past 6 years and this forum has really been a valuable resource. I'm thinking about getting a new X5 so I'll probably have some questions.
The X3 can drive on well maintained gravel or dirt roads as long as there are no ruts, so essentially it is not for off-roading. I drove an Explorer before that, while not a real off-road vehicule like a Jeep it can navigate some pretty deep ruts, I took it off-road a lot. How does the X5 with the off-roading package compare to an Explorer or similar SUV? |

Video demos show the new X5 and X7 more capable off road than prior generations with the new off-road package (ZOR). You can check out the videos here:
https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1503179 Autogefühl has an in-depth review: The off-road package (ZOR) comprises of adjustable 2-axle air suspension, electrical damper control, Offroad toggle for various offroad programs, electronically regulated rear axle differential lock, reinforced underride protection, xOffroad camera for offroad driving. The driver can select 4 different offroad driving modes via the offroad button. This allows the driving characteristics to be adapted to the local conditions, e.g. snow, sand, gravel or rock. Additionally, a preconfigured ride level is set based on the offroad mode selected. The resulting additional ground clearance increases the fording depth and offroad capability on challenging sections, e.g. embankments or ramps with steep drive-up angle. You can dive into the technical guide starting at page 23: 02_G05 Powertrain-Chassis.pdf
