19" winter set Bridgestone or Michelin?
I'll need wintertires on my 19" 734 style wheels.
BMW offers: 265/50R19 110H XL Bridgestone Blizzak LM-001 Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV ZP Reviews on internet are unclear and very mixed. What tires would you recommend? We have cold weather, around 0C most of the time in winters, ice and snow for sure. I'm also driving in snow in skiing areas. |

Alpin if you have more cold rain vs. snow/ice. Blizzak for regular winter, Nokian for hardcore winter. Alpin will do the best on dry roads and better in transitional weather compared to the other two. Nothing comes close to Nokian when driving on ice but they do not do well in warmer temps and/or in the wet (optimized for snow/ice). Blizzak may be the best compromise to cover every condition but is the master of none.

LM-001 is an older tire while Alpin 5 is a new tire that excels in all the recent comparison tests. It would be a fair comparison if the Blizzaks were LM-005. I personally went with Nokian Hakka R3 because they had a special deal at the time making it the best value. Plus for snow and ice, it is hard to beat the Hakkas and the low rolling resistance also helps with the electric range. However, for dry and wet conditions Alpin 5 is superior without losing much on snow and ice performance. If money was not a factor, Alpin 5 would have been my pick for the best all around winter performance...
