Rear ended, Drive Recorder Footage

Hello! I just wanted to share my experience this weekend. Long story short, I was rear ended by a drunk driver going about 50 mph when I was coming to stop at a red light.

The car was great! I JUST purchased the drive recorder feature a few weeks ago and just set it and never bothered with it again. I attempted to manually get the car to save the recording but I was dazed and wasn't sure which button it was. Glad to say, the car recognized the accident and already had the whole thing saved as "Accident on 08-16-2020". Here is a link to the video. Note: I did lose some quality converting the video format into something I would be able to upload. The native video resolution is 1080 and is better quality than what is uploaded on YouTube.

The active headrest and both front seat seatbelt tensioners deployed.

The car that struck me ignited into flames a few minutes after impact.

Glad to be alive but also dreading the whole insurance/repair process. Will keep everyone updated with the estimated cost and time for repair.

Damn bro.. I am so sorry to see this. How new is the car? Depending on your insurance, you may be able to get the full MSRP of your car and/or a New car replacement.

I don't know about you, but I would not want the car anymore after an accident like that.

obviously glad you are okay and the truck protected you but I'm very sorry for you having to deal with these next steps. I hope the guy was insured. Also that footage from the drive recorder was really good. this is, unfortunately, the first video i've seen from that app.

I thought resolution of those cameras are a bit higher. You barely can see the car plate number...

Very scary. Glad you're ok and alive. The footage was interesting to watch. Which option allows this capability?

I did lose a bit of quality converting the video from the raw format to something I would be able to upload. So this is not the full native resolution. You are able to make out the plate if you watch frame by frame on the raw video. I should note this to the original post.

Firstly glad you're ok. It's only metal and will be repaired/replaced. Sometimes sadly it's not the case for us mere mortals so great that nobody was badly hurt.

Really shows how good the drive recorder is!

I'm glad you are ok.... and this re-confirms why I put so much effort into getting the drive recorder to work, exporting it, and keeping spare USB drives in the car. Arguably, one of the best features on our cars.

Now.... with all the niceties out of the way.....

F-ing drunk drivers.... Irresponsible f-ing human pieces of shit.... out risking their own lives, and putting the lives of responsible people at risk, and in many cases.... ruining or ending the lives of those people.

Drunk drivers are right at the bottom of my shit-list with pedophiles.

I would have SERIOUSLY had a hard time not dragging that MF-er out of his car, and beating him within an inch of his life. God help him if one of my kids was in the car and been hurt. I would have put him in a wheelchair, permanently.

I hate to say this.... but I actually HOPE he was hurt in that crash. Not dead.... but hurt.... so he hopefully remembers it next time he decides to take a drink.

Probably offended a few people with my deep-seeded hate of drunk drivers. Sorry, but not sorry.

Crashes: yes. Fires: super rare, but never from a collision like the one shown in the video.

he probably doesn't have insurance and would have taken off if his car didn't catch on fire like that. While I agree with you about drunk drivers, I got rear ended two years ago in brand new f15 on Christmas afternoon, on a bright and sunny cloudless day, with literally only a few cars on the road. This arrogant kid gets out of his Audi and clearly he was texting is what caused him to run into me. Of course he doesn't have insurance and my blood was boiling. He was so dumb he actually thought he could pin it on me, somehow it was *my* fault because he didn't stop in time to look up from whatever he was looking at on his phone.

And the worst thing about this is, I have had to be around so many friends who will blatantly text or use their phone will driving. I will tell them to put it away and they don't listen, or worse, shame me for asking them to. So imagine the hatred you have for drunks and now basically the same type of situation is occurring but very few people share your level of outrage or refuse to act right.

in any case, there's nothing to do but be vigilant, or just be lucky and hope you're not involved in an accident with any of these kinds of people. distracted driving of all kinds is... tragic.

Really glad you are ok. That vid is so telling...he REALLY came up on you fast.

Texas is one of those states (I was born there, Lived in Los Angeles for 27 years, back for 2 to care for my mother after a stroke, and now back in LA) - where you can still hold your phone while driving. Only certain cities don't allow texting while driving.

And one thing I learned - as evidenced by the vid - is EVERYONE drives so fast in TX - because you can. It was occasionally fun to unleash my GTR or my S6 with 6000hp on a deserted road, but some people drive that way thru the middle of Dallas on freeways.

All my accidents in LA were at most around 15-20 MPH. PreCovid so much traffic HP was a waste. lol. The accidents I saw while in TX - some were at 90mph with cars flipping etc.

So - glad our X5s are tankinsh, and again...glad you are ok.

Glad to hear you're OK - crazy accident. Looking at the footage it doesn't even look like the car was trying to stop. So crazy.

Off topic: I like the "frozen" black/graphite paint (wrap?) you had going on. That looks sharp.

Saw the footage and glad to hear that you are okay. This kind of accident makes me angry. Anyway, I thought the recording could be configured to trigger automatically 5 secs-10 secs before the incident, but the footage looks like the recording was on the whole time long before the impact? What am I missing?

looks like the recording is 40 seconds long, so he probably has his configured 20s before and 20s after. That's the max you can set it.
