looks like the recording is 40 seconds long, so he probably has his configured 20s before and 20s after.
Thanks but how does the system detect that an incident would occur and begin the recording beforehand?

It's continuously recording but only saves the footage in case of an accident. So basically the hard drive has a continuous recording of 40 seconds that gets recorded over and over and over again unless something triggers it to save that 40 second snippet.

Got it. This makes sense.

It is worth noting that the camera system is 1080P - or 1920 x 1080. If you use the camera to record a situation manually, you can select a single camera and get the full resolution. You might pick the front camera, for example.

But for the purposes of monitoring for accidents, it is probably best to keep all four cameras going, because you cannot predict from which direction an accident will come.
So when using all four cameras, the overall resolution is still 1920x1080, but it is divided into 4 quadrants. So each camera gets a quadrant of the screen, and each quadrant has dimensions of 960x540. So when you see the accident in this video, all you care about is the rear camera, but you can only see a resolution of 960x540 in that quadrant.

The constraint is not the individual camera lens. What matters is how many pixels are available on the silicon chip that is recording (in this case 1920x1080). These pixels can be assigned to a single camera, or allotted to multiple cameras.

In my case, I was disappointed that this option was not included on the X5 I purchased, even though I had the the parking assistance package, etc. so I should have all these cameras. I would have had to get the Executive Package to have this feature, if I recall correctly). I learned later that I could add this feature through the App Store, and I got it immediately, for reasons that are obvious in the original post above.

I agree mate. Should carry a custodial sentence as there is NO EXCUSE. It's just disgusting, selfish, dangerous behaviour that results in so many necessary injuries and deaths to innocent people. We don't have strong enough penalties

Glad that you are OK. Now for the Ninefourteener:
Would any of the "offended" guys like to be in that BMW??? If not then they have to shut up. As much as you hate drunk drivers, multiply that by 10 for me.

Glad you are safe and sorry for you. The X5 is a big beast compared to the other car... Did you get the option after delivery? I took the Park Assist Plus but not the recording though it was cheap. Now it makes me want to add it but too late to change...

Stock color is a BMW individual color, Its Dark Graphite Metallic. I bought one off the lot for a discount and it happened to be someones Individual order they didn't like.

Off topic: I like the "frozen" black/graphite paint (wrap?) you had going on. That looks sharp.
Thanks! Its XPEL Satin wrapped! Heres a link to my post showing the before and after. The color is original factory and its just a satin paint protection film over it but you can still see the metallic flakes through it.

I did! Mines a 2019 and I had the option to purchase the "app" on the BMW Connected Store website a few weeks ago.

Looks like the drunk driver did not even apply his brakes

If he had not of hit your car then he could of possibly killed himself or some other innocent person driving through that junction. Likewise if you were not driving the X5 the consequences are not worth thinking about.

Im glad you were not seriously injured although, although its a kick in the teeth to have such damage on a car so new.

All the best

Even though the car appears to have protected you quite well, neck and spine injuries are weird and may not manifest themselves as pain for a couple of days. Be on the look out for that: if it was going to start it would start right about now relative to your incident date. Sorry, but better to be aware than not.

I gotta say, I'm amazed at the minimum amount of damage from such a hard hit, assuming the frame didn't get bent. I did almost as much damage back in Dec when I backed my one month old M50i into my automatic gate that got stuck, while going less than 5mph. (For the sake my relationship, I won't go into details.) From my experience with the repair, shouldn't be too bad, again assuming the frame isn't bent. Just a matter of parts availability and be sure they install/adjust the rear hatch properly. I had to take mine back three times to get it to stop making noise, and that was to an official BMW dealership repair shop.

And ya, glad no injuries. Although probably scared the crap out of ya!

Sucks that this had to happen but I am very impressed how well the X5 held up. Damage seems minimal.

This is exactly why in addition to the cars cameras I also invested in a full 4K front/rear dashcam (thinkware U1000) with full parking mode protection. This way i should be well protected in an event of an accident or if someone hits me while i was parked. I have it rigged to a cellink external battery so it doesn't use the cars battery in parking mode and has enough power to record up to 15 hours while the car is parked.

I switched out my 6MT F80 M3 which i loved for the X5M mainly because of the added safety of being in a bigger/heavier car. I loved the M3 but i had a bad experience where i had to drive it through one of the worst snow/ice storms i've ever witnessed. I had the best snow tires/wheels installed which got me through the situation but during that 13 hour drive I saw accidents happening literally left and right. Lost count after 15 accidents with one being fatal that happened seconds before i got there. That made me think long and hard is my fun/entertainment driving a manual M3 being worth it at the expense of the family's safety so here I am with the X5M sort of the best of both worlds.

May I ask how is the cellink external battery pack? Can it withstand the extreme heat during summer times when the vehicle is turned off?

How do you manage side recording (left and right) in park mode?

Thanks

The celllink battery was designed for automotive use from the start so no issues with heat. I had the old cellink battery B in my previous cars for 4 years without problems and now i upgraded to the cellink Neo in the X5M. Just as a precautionary measure i bought a Lipo battery bag from amazon that its just big enough to hold the cellink. Its designed to contain any fires that could occur when dealing with batteries. I dont think anyone normally does this but for me i figure its cheap insurance ($20) and it keeps all of my wiring neater under the cargo floor where i keep it.

No way to record side impacts with the camera. Just front and rear but thats usually enough. It is triggered via motion or impact detection.

Alan

Glad you made it out ok. But sorry you had to experience this accident. Hopefully everything works out and you'll be back on the road in due time.

This arrogant kid gets out of his Audi and clearly he was texting is what caused him to run into me. Of course he doesn't have insurance and my blood was boiling. He was so dumb he actually thought he could pin it on me, somehow it was *my* fault because he didn't stop in time to look up from whatever he was looking at on his phone.

And the worst thing about this is, I have had to be around so many friends who will blatantly text or use their phone will driving. I will tell them to put it away and they don't listen, or worse, shame me for asking them to. So imagine the hatred you have for drunks and now basically the same type of situation is occurring but very few people share your level of outrage or refuse to act right.

in any case, there's nothing to do but be vigilant, or just be lucky and hope you're not involved in an accident with any of these kinds of people. distracted driving of all kinds is... tragic.
There are more accidents caused from texting than drunk driving. It is amazing to see how many people text and drive. As far as I am concerned if you cause an accident from texting there should be a 30 day mandatory jail term immediately after the accident and then another sentence handed down by the court and this of course would be based on various circumstances. I think this could be solved by having something in the cell phone that detects you are driving and disables texting. It could be an app or in the hardware. Something has to be done to put a stop to this.
