Exhaust

Hi All,

It looks like most of the other B58ers are pulling a fuse to keep the exhaust servo in open position. This keeps both sides at start up for a slightly improved sound (not much else). Has anyone attempted this?

Will try it tomorrow when i empty out the trunk didnt realize u have to remove the trunk floor to open the fuse box. Nothing is simple with BMW.

Just bought my X5 40i last week. Love the car so far! So is it the one labeled 7.5 on the far left? I can see it is gone in your picture and I still have that one so I am going to go ahead and assume that's it. I guess I'll get someone to drive my car for me so I can try this out. Hopefully I don't end up with a CEL.

Just curious if anyone else has done this and it worked, and no CEL? Was hoping to do this, and not have to go underneath and pull the spring. Thanks!

Any video on driveby, WOT, partial throttle, cold-start to share?

I'll have my G05 40i home in the first week of September. Hopefully sometime in that first 2-3 weeks I can get the truck into my preferred shop - I'm going to see what they can work up for a better outbound sound. Otherwise it'll have to wait until closer to Halloween.

This is the shop who came up with the "OEM Exhaust Mod" that was the bees knees on the V8 E9x platform cars. Hopefully they can deliver something appealing to my ears and not so offensive to my wallet.

The G01 thread also had some discovery on a cold weather with the flap going back to close position permanently. I'd be careful about this mod.

It'll be really easy to tell if it's closed in cold weather...you'll have exhaust coming from only one side on startup. Pretty easy to put the fuse back in and start over.

My car has been running flawlessly and it always makes me happy hitting remote start and walking up to the car!
I understand it is pretty easy to check and reset but my point is it is not a 'set and forget it' kind of mod. One should keep checking if the flap has closed every time to avoid possible issues as mentioned in the x3 post.

Just a friendly warning to others who might have missed possible issue with this mod.

Ok, just know it's not an apples-to-apples comparison with the G01. While both are done via a fuse pull, on the G05 you actually have to be at WOT driving vs. the other triggered after warm up and done at idle.

It was pretty hard to get the valve opened and I'd expect it will never return to back normal position. If that did happen, my only risk is slightly more exhaust back pressure, but that can be fixed by simply opening the trunk, pulling the panel and plugging one fuse back in (oh my!).

Man, this forum is getting really lame. We may as well be talking about Sienna minivans...

Please don't get me wrong. I want to try this as well and I'd like to thank you for initiating the post.

You did acknowledge that there is a risk. I'm just stating the fact the possible issue in the x3 forum that I found buried in later post. I figured it is something that interested enthusiast would be good to know.

In another thread, he indicated he was a beta tester for the Bootmod3 tune.

I'm waiting for that tune as well... hopefully any day.

Wouldn’t we be able to use the Carly Device to open the flap and then pull the fuse, instead of unhooking the wire harness by the exhaust?

Anyone know or try this method?

Literally just saw this youtube clip too. It seems to work so I don't see why it wouldn't work for others who try it. I just don't think that was an option when this question was originally asked and responded to by everyone.

So is Carly confirmed as working to open/shut the valve at will then? If so this is the way to go!

Not sure about confirmed but if you watch that YouTube video he had it working. My Carly comes tomorrow, I will give it a try.

I can confirm that BimmerLink (from the maker of BimmerCode) does open the flap. The car needs to be engine-running, however. I did use this technique to open the flap and pull the cable to have it stick open.
