Used 2024 50e?

Been in the market for a 50e and lossed out on the December offers since every dealership sold out. I am close to pulling the trigger on submitting a new build, but just stumbled across a 2024 50e with 5,600 miles just got listed at a non BMW dealer in Florida. Fully loaded.

The Carfax shows the car was purhcased in NY, then 2 months and 2060 miles later, it was serviced at BMW in Florida. Services performed:
  • Maintenance inspection completed
  • Computer reprogrammed
  • High voltage battery charged
  • Battery replaced

Later serviced again at 2065 miles, and now at 5600 miles and 3 months later its up for sale.

Could this be a lemon that was picked up at an auction ? Going to give the dealer a call to find out more, but wanted to see if this is an obvious red flag.

I would think it is a buy back. There may not be anything more wrong with it than any other 50e though. You will have to weigh the discount you are getting against how much risk you think you are taking. It still will be covered by the new vehicle warranty which will give some protection. If you are get $10-15k discount off new versus $5k you need to decide. What numbers are they looking at?

Dealer states it’s a trade in (though I take that with a grain of salt), it’s about a $12k discount, listed at $76k.

That is a decent discount for it. If you do decide to pursue it make sure you take it somewhere to get a pre-purchase inspection just in case.

Let us know how things turn out.

In case anyone was curious, I was able to have the dealership track down the service history from the BMW dealership. It's what we all expected, previous owner brought it in due to two messages:
1. battery overheating
2. drivetrain malfunction alert

It was in the shop for over about 2 months, there was a backorder on parts.
Summary of the service:

"2060 DEFECTIVE SME AND CSC-6125510 REDUCED -1 FRU FOR 6125900 D1 -FC21F04B D5 FOLLOWED TEST PLAN FOR SME. SUBMIT TSARA CASE #2817XXX AS PER TSARA REQUEST TO CHECK AND TEST BOTH 12 VOLT BATTERIES.

PERFORMED MIDTRONIC TEST ON 12 VOLT BATTERIES BOTH GOOD. ALSO PERFORMED CELL MODULE TEST PLAN, CSC TEST PLAN, HV BATTERY COOLING, AND SME/BMU TEST PLANS SUBMIT ALL DATA TO TSARA WITH RESULTS.

AS PER TSARA NEED TOREMOVE HV BATTERY FROM VEHICLE FORFURTHER DIAGNOSIS.

EVACUATE ANDRECOVER R1234YF, REMOVED HV BATTERY AND OPEN UP HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY REMOVED CELL MODULE 3 AND 6 TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE OTHER 4 CELL MODULES.

PERFORMED AND CHECKED ALL CELL MODULES WITH GEN 5TKR CHARGER TO READ OUT ALL VOLTAGES AND TEMP READINGS FROM ALL 6 CELL MODULES.

AS PER TSARA TOLD TO REPLACE THE SME/BMU AND BOTH CSC MODULES. RE-ASSEMBLE CELL MODULES, REPLACED SME/BMU AND BOTH CSC MODULES (2) .

PERFORMED EOS TEST PASSED. PERFORMED STARTUP OF HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY WAS SUCCESSFUL.

PROGRAM AND CODE SME AND COMPLETE VEHICLE. RECHARGE AC AND CLEARED ALL FAULTS, TEST DROVE VEHICLE AND RECHECK OK CONFIRMED REPAIR."

With that being said, I am no longer pursueing this vehicle in the event more issues arise.
I will wait out a new build, local dealer stating 3 months out minimum.

Just something to consider, we know of no differences with new builds in regards to those issues and they are still occurring.

Not saying a new one will have the issues just that it is possible.

Definitely a good point, I'm going to go test drive it and if it seems good have the pre-inspection done. At least worth a look.

Call me crazy but after viewing and test driving it, I ended up taking it home
This is my first BMW and I’m stoked

Worth the risk, especially knowing this could happen with first gens.

Turns out previous owners were a very old couple (84 and 86) it and they wanted to switch back to Acura (been loyal customers). They stated BMW infotainment on the 50e was too confusing (I’m sure the service was not settling as well). They traded it in for an MDX Type S.

Acura's Infotainment trackpad is a miserable PITA. The BMW system is much more intuitive. No comparison. MDX type S is roughly the same price as an X5 and NOT in the same league at all.

Condorll, I completely agree, since I took a look at in when shopping. To each their own though.

lol, I am not surprised. I have a July build and it had the valve replaced at 1200 miles - it is at almost 5000 now and no issues. It is a great car - wife's daily driver - she handed the MDX to me.

It seems that the MY25 MDX will get rid of the current UI/UX POS and go with the touch screen+Google auto S/W well received in new Honda models (I have one). I am also on the fence between a MY25 50e (not confident about MY24) or the revised MDX Type-S...

Please keep us posted on the status of this vehicle as it will make a nice data point. I’m glad BMW can diagnose and replace individual modules and not the entire pack (this is essential for making EV/Hybrids financially viable and sustainable-warranty replacing an entire pack due to 1 bad module has been a bad business practice of many manufacturers…not just BMW, I had a Toyota hybrid do this, they replaced it out of warranty on the condition they could “keep the old pack”-for diagnosis…for $3600, heck yes!)

Did it seem off that they charged the Freon? (Why would they even check it unless customer complained it wasn’t cold?) so, possible slow Freon leak?

They are likely referring to the battery cooling system.
