2021 X6 engine shuts off every time I open the door in park...Why????

So whenever I get to my destination and put the car in park, the auto start/stop turns the engine off.

Fine, thats ok.

But once I open the door, everything is off, the car is basically completely off. I have to hit the start button to get things going again, not put it in drive.

I tried disabling the "engine off when open doors" feature as well but it does absolutely nothing.

So whats the deal? How do I get this thing from turn off completely when I open the door. It would be ok if the engine just turns off like at a red light and goes back on when I shift...but needing to completely start the car up again is ridiculous....especially if Im just getting out for a second to grab the mail or pick up some takeout.

Between this and not being able to turn off auto stop/start in comfort mode, im super frustrated with little quality of life things for the sake of saving 1 gallon over 5 fill ups? WTF

Well, it's annoying that the option to disable this exists but does nothing.

Well, look at it this way...when you exit the car, you can't be driving it...so, just like when you stop at a light, the engine typically will shut off.

FWIW, if you're in a situation where you want to actually drive with the door open, it will let you IF your seatbelt is still fastened.

Yea I get it, and it would be ok if I could just put the car in drive and go as if I was at a red light. But this is a complete shut up with the "goodbye" message.

Sounds like you have it set to go into idle state when you open the door.

No, what that option does is it turns off the electronics once you open the door so the radio and such doesn't keep playing-its very poorly worded.

I can have that option on and off, and it makes no difference. The engine will still turn off when I open the door. The only difference is, the radio will still play until I lock my car.

I know what that option does and that is why I sent you the info. The engine shutting off is normal and as designed. I was responding to your goodbye message posting so you can check that.

Yeah, im ok with having the goodbye idle state...as long as I decide to turn the engine off.

The car apparently feels like deciding that for me.

Its just immensely annoying when I stop in the driveway to get the mail and the car turns off, not just auto start stop, so I need to press the start button again. Its very very silly.

when i'm about to park the car, even if briefly just to get out to get the mail or something, I usually just put on the parking cameras. It's become a habit for me now, getting as close as possible to the curb or sides using the parking cameras, and as a result the car doesn't shut off.

My solution so far has been to just blip the gas to turn the engine back on before opening the door. Very stupid but effective.

Mine is set to do that and it has never worked for me on my 2020 X7. I routinely stop the car, put it in park, take my seat belt off, open the door and get out to remove tree branches in the road way or driveway. The engine remains running with the door opened or closed. I have it set to turn off when the door is opened.

It's been this way since day one starting with 07/2019.59. Three updates later (I'm now on 2020/07.54) and it still doesn't work.

This makes the car very easy to Hijack. Especially since I have my key fob with me when I exit the vehicle.

Yea, from my short time owning this thing it feels like BMW really doesn't have the software dialed in.

Im getting so many weird little annoying glitches like this. Its unfortunate because its ruining the initial experience and Im already feeling like I should have gone with the GLE AMG 53 coupe.

That option is not to turn the engine off when you open the door, it is to turn off the radio/electronics/ventilation. I believe that the default setting is that all that turns off when you lock the vehicle when the engine is off. Some people don't like that so they give you other options like to have it wait until the driver door is opened as i have it set as well.

If you are worried about someone hijacking your car when you step out, you'd either need to turn it off manually or lock it (mine honks the horn if i lock it while it is running which is annoying).

The only situation that the car may turn itself off automatically is if ASS had turned the engine off when you stopped and you exit the car.

The reason is likely to prevent accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.
If you step out of your car when ASS has turned the engine off, it would be easy for you to get distracted, and not realize that the car is not going to stay off. In a garage this could be dangerous. So to avoid this, if the engine is off when you exit the vehicle, it kills it completely so that it would not turn on again unexpectedly. They could have implemented it better... allowed you a 5 minute grace period where if you come back and try to move the car it would startup the engine automatically for you... but that is not the case.

I turn off ASS every time i start the car. You mentioned "not being able to turn off auto stop/start in comfort mode"... did you mean that turning it off doesn't "stick" and that you need to do it every time you start the car or that you literally cannot turn it off in your model?

He has a 21 so there is on button for turning it off.

Yes, that's how mine works now. If the engine is off the radio/streaming is still playing until the last person in the car opens thier door. Then iDrive shuts down.

However, if you read through the previous posts others are seeing different results. They're saying that the engine shuts off when they exit the vehicle. That never happens in my car no matter what settings are set in iDrive.

Does putting in sport mode still disable ASS? If so, could be another workaround. Put it in sport before you get out.

Heck, put it in Sport when you start it, car is much more fun.

Putting it in Sport mode does turn off the ASS. What some folks have done as a work around is set up their Sport Individual to be all comfort settings and then code their default start mode to be Sport Individual.

Another way is to move the transmission shifter sideways to the left from "D" (Transmission sport mode). This would also disable ASS. The advantage is that you can easily move the shifter back and forth without looking (which you usually need to when trying the press the sport mode button). And when you turn off the car, shifter moving back to the center automatically also looks cool.... (yeah, I'm bored...)
