Ivory Merino Leather - upkeep/staining
I see so many of your new G05's with the ivory, and absolutely love it. I have the luxury of dressing fairly casual for work, so enjoy wearing denim jeans quite a bit. My wife swears that I would be making a huge mistake with the ivory, as the dies in my jeans will be easily transferred. Can anyone speak to their experience (albeit recent) with the upkeep and maintenance of the ivory leather, and specifically how easily dies from clothing transfer?
Thanks in advance! |

I have a similar color on another vehicle I have and I coated it with Gyeon Leather Coat (Ceramic coating) more than a year ago and I wear jeans as well. It has zero dye transfer from my jeans. It’s great stuff and stain proof as well. It’s best to coat it as soon as you get so you don’t have to clean it. Super simple to apply as well.

I applied the first week when I received mine. No transfer so far and I wear jeans daily. |

I bought my 2013 E70 with a Sand Beige interior... Very light color, BUT not as light as the ivory. I had ongoing battles with blue jean dye transfer. Good news was, it came right out with leather cleaner. Bad news was, I had to clean the seat bases every other month or more.
It may be that the newer BMW leather is impervious to blue jean dye... or - maybe some of the newer leather treatments prevent the transfer in the first place. I'm trying Coffee/Brown this time around (with my new G05) so I can spend less time worrying about cleaning up dye/stains. Time will tell with regard to both leather colors! I love the Ivory interior... just... in someone else's X5! |

That’s a wardrobe problem, not a leather issue.. Prewash the jeans before wearing them.
I never had issues with white leather the last 3 years and took the kids across country and to many beach vacations with my last ride. Mine always looks new but I always keep it clean. My jeans are washed a few times and never had any dye transfer that I noticed. The fact is if your jeans are transferring dye on ivory leather, they are doing it on all the other colors so browns will start to look off color eventually and need cleaned. Ivory is just a most “honest” reflection of what’s going on. IMO, the look of Ivory white is so beautiful and upscale, it’s worth the minor cleaning. The look is off the scale gorgeous and everyone’s jaw drops when they see inside with the new ambient lights. Go for it: No compromise and no regrets with Carbon Black and Ivory white. I am all in. Thank You. It is Piano Black. BMW does piano black as good as Rolls Royce . The lacquer and buff on the wood is first rate.

Those old jeans were the gift that kept on giving, right up to the day I traded in the E70. That leather seemed to pull the dye right out. Hoping the newer leather in the G05 is less prone to that! |

I have another car with Ivory, C63 harder to get over the bolsters on it so you have to rub against it a bit getting in and out each day. All my jeans are more than a year old and probably washed 50-100 times each and they still transfer color - seems until your jeans just loose color forever until they basically turn white.
Anyway - in my other car, I get a bit of transfer, nothing 15 seconds with a little Zaino leather cleaner doesn't take off, so once every 2 weeks I just give it a little light clean to remove any blue - super easy and comes right off, so nothing to be scared of. Will see how the X5 is, so far 3 weeks and no hint of blue, but my wife drives it a lot more and doesn't wear jeans very often - my 10 or 12 times in and out of the car in jeans has not so far transferred any blue. All seats get dirty the same it is just if you can see it or not and really with a good leather product, leather is super easy to clean to look like new - if you don't want to clean your seats then maybe get black so you can't tell how dirty they are.

Isnt that the truth. Some colors are more “honest” letting you know they need to be cleaned. Clean leather is happy leather and will last a lot longer than dirty leather.

Ya some people are happy with looks clean which is just as dirty - the stuff I have got off dark colored leather is pretty gross even though it looked perfect and all that dirt is what damages it for sure!

That tells me black and brown leather owners should be using it with the same frequency. Too easy to ignore and your leather will always be in top form and healthy.
I have another tip I have been using for years with my 911 C4S with black leather. I have been using the valet disposable seat covers for when I am washing or just grimy and I have to move or sit on the car. I use them in my Power Wagon when I am really dirty as cheap seat insurance. Plastic is super thin like a dry cleaner bag but provides a waterproof barrier between the dirt and your clean seats. These are super cheap and what dealers (should be) using when they service you car. Takes 5 seconds to slip them over your seats. Stupid cheap for 100 at Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Last edited by MystroX5; 01-15-2019 at 08:56 AM.. |

Most of my BMWs have had very light leather interiors and the one thing I am EXTRA careful about is my belts ... and I NEVER wear a leather jacket while driving.
I had an E92 with Cream Beige (almost white) Dakota leather and my belt (or maybe the bottom of my leather jacket) burnished the leather where my lower back hit. I had to have it redyed because nothing would remove the blackish burnished leather marks. I haven't had any problems keeping light leather showroom clean since I started watching my "leather on leather" action.

What product do you guys clean your interior with? I'm experiencing dye transfer from my work pants and am pretty upset with how quickly it happened (took delivery Nov 15).
I've had a Range Rover with ivory interior for over 2 years with no discoloring and I'm seeing it already with a 3 month old BMW. |

I had a very light color on my Merino leather seats on my E60 M5 (believe it was called "Silverstone"?). Boy, i was VERY concerned about them showing dirt before I took delivery.
Turned out it was no issue at all. No special maintenance required in addition to regular cleaning once in a while.. |

Ivory is utterly beautiful but people who have owned their vehicle less than 6 months are not the right ones to ask about this.

Almost all my interiors have been light, and find they can stay new-looking with a 20-30 minute cleaning every 4-8 weeks. My 5-year old Luxor (light beige) looks new. Best product I've used is Zaino #9 (cleaner) and Zaino #10 (treatment). Unlike everything else, n/a on Amazon...have to order direct from Zaino.

I want to do a follow up with how my Merino Ivory leather has held up after taking the family on a 2200 mile road trip. My kids are 11yr and 9yr. A trip this long with kids is a bit more extreme on a interior than everyday use. I am happy to say that my interior still looks and smells new. I don’t even have a crease in the leather on the drivers seat yet. When we got home I cleaned and conditioned the leather again to evaluate it. Absolutely pristine and new looking. I used Sonax this time with a white microfiber cloth.
