I was surprised with HK - it's pretty good! I cannot imagine what Bowers & Wilkins sounds like.

The grills and lights are a low cost upgrade to say you have B&W. Like replacing ones M50i badge with X5M Competition 😊 |

Since I couldn't get the HK option, I just had the standard Hifi speakers replaced in my 2002 X5 45e, and went with Match (Audiotec Fishcher) for the front, rear and center. The sound difference is significant and I probably won't add the Match amp at this point. I'm really pleased.
At this point, I don't see the need to add the Match AMP with DSP or swap out the subs. The installer did point out that both front doors were missing the screw that's behind the door handle trim piece. And that there was no insulation or sound deadening material behind the front door speakers. He didn't charge me to add some of this material in-between the speaker and outer door. I've seen a lot of discussion around BavSound and Focal, but not much on Match speakers. They are definitely a significant improvement worth considering and similarly priced to the BavSound option. |

Having heard the various options and the base HiFi on the X5, upgrading the speakers is so worth it. The Match DSP/amp is at least as good as the HK, if you ever go that route.
I would go with Match/Focal's/BavSound over the Chinese B&W any day of the week....I was told the Chinese grey market speakers use whatever parts they can get (substituting local parts for the imported ones that they often don't have access to). So they might look the same, but might not perform to OEM specs. My 2 cents worth... Last edited by FCX5; 10-26-2021 at 10:04 AM.. |

Yeah, the Match amp is down wind of the RAM module so no issues with interfering with the iDrive. That said, I was concerned about the increased battery consumption when I installed my amp, perhaps that might set off some alarms, but so far after several months no issues. Note that the amp has a auto-off setting that turns off the amp within seconds of not getting a signal so no worries about a drain on the battery once you leave the car.

ha, well I'd say with digital audio there's no such thing as just playing the music
DACs just in & of themselves are a such a massive area one could spend the next 5 years studying it all and still not know it well. And then there's the amps, and then there's the drivers, and then there's the design of the acoustic space, and then there's your ears. Add it all up and there's no there's no universally great sounding system, especially since, past a certain level of fidelity, everything becomes a preference for escalating costs & diminishing returns. All of that said, given very nice "budget" headphone systems will cost you $2-$3k minimum (arguably you can do it <$1k), even a B&W system at $3400 probably isn't very special on any absolute scale, so if that's what we mean by "just playing the music" then I"m in! |

The RAM module is mounted behind the door on left side of the cargo area. I placed my amp just below it in the styrofoam tray. It fits snuggly in there along with excess power/ground cables. The cargo cover can still be stowed over it when not in use. I was concerned about heat given the amp isn't mounted on a bracket but I checked it several times after long drives and found the RAM module to be hotter than the amp. Better would be to find a bracket to piggyback onto the RAM bracket if someone knows of one.

I saw that one, my amp is directly from Audiotech and didn't come with a mounting bracket that piggybacks on the RAM bracket. I suspect I'll need to fabricate one from a universal bracket.
