FWIW, in the US, making changes to the emission controls can get you into trouble. The flap is there to help the vehicle warm up quicker by getting the catalytic converter up to temperature faster. In the meantime, you're going to be spewing more emissions than you should. All this for a little cold start improvement in sound?

What kind of trouble? I've seen people drive around with catless downpipes and pass emission tests - which is basically the standard in Illinois as far as emissions goes. I've never seen anyone get into "trouble" for messing with an exhaust - unless maybe Cali?

Anybody else feels more turbo lag / less low end torque with this mod? I think it’s quite noticeable in comfort or Sport mode.

Probably because there's less back pressure for the turbo.

I don't see a point in welding a flap or pulling a fuse on a 70k+ luxury vehicle to make it sound 10% better at all time.

Keep it in sport and the flap opens, whats the big deal? Do you really need it to be a little bit louder on start up? Will it hurt your ego if people can't hear your 6 cyl exhaust at low rpms? This engine sounds fantastic in sport mode. It's not electronic sound piped in either, its the real deal. I had my GF do a pull while I was outside and it sounded awesome in sport.

Pony up 3K for the M performance exhaust if you want a nicer sound.

This isn't a damn college kid civic to play around with fuses and welds.

The vehicle passed its emission test procedure as delivered. Making changes to that, if done by a shop, is a severe fine. It's a little messier if the owner does it. By taking longer to warm up, the vehicle will also use more fuel. Catalytic converters require some excess fuel to bring them up to temp to work properly. By opening up the flap early, it will be using more fuel for longer to achieve that. All this for a bit of sound? Personally, I like it quiet. Now, if I floor it, that's another thing, but just sitting there, quiet is better.

Again, fine by who? I've passed multiple emissions tests in Illinois without catalytic convertors. Only a number of systems have to be in a "ready" state to pass emissions. Please don't spread misinformation, or at least limit it to your state.

FWIW, at least in NH, while they used to do a tailpipe emissions test, now, they look only at the computer to see if there are any faults.

If a mechanic disables any emission control equipment in a vehicle, it's a federal hit...now, how they would get involved would likely depend on what the state alerted them to, which, in many places just doesn't happen.
https://www.epa.gov/enforcement/clea...se-resolutions

If your state runs actual exhaust pipe testing, by the time you drove there, the vehicle was likely at full operating temperature, and it would not show a hit. But, each time you do a cold start, you'd be putting more pollutants into the air, all to just sound better to you.

No, they've been doing it via OBD2 for a long time in Illinois. You are allowed to have a few system in "not ready" state, which is what I was referring to.

Did this exhaust come with the M Sport package? Or is it something different?

What is the difference? Just a little less sound dampening? Bigger diameter piping? Less restrictive? Or is it just an audible difference?

I feel like this mod is useless on MY21. The MY21 cars sound quieter compared to the older ones.

Valve open when off

I realized the valve is open by default when car is off. I wrote a more detailed elaboration of my discovery here: https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1789350

I had the wire method and had it open for almost a year. sound was great, specially when the car first starts. did not hear any drone..but i felt the low-end torque being affected. I do have the racechip installed and even like that my low end suffered. I reverted back to stock and the low end torque came back! car feels quick again from the start... also using the sport individual with comfort settings as someone else mentioned and the car has a bit more sound than comfort. Not as loud as the flap open but ok..so keeping my flap back to stock..my 2 cents

I felt the same way, a bit of a lag, but when I changed the Airfilter to K&N filter in BMW origin box it was gone. The new filter is way thinner than the original and flows way better!
Car is now sounding a lot more both from the exhaust and the intake.

Is that K&N 33-3079?

(Answering my own double-check: yes)

Got Bimmerlink opened the valve removed the fuse 203 and guess what absolute waste of time, money and effort 😄 It works yes flap stayed open but barely any noticeable difference in sound forget pops or bangs on the contrary the nice blip blip which I used to get on launch when gears changed is gone the fuse is going back in tomorrow. Please save yourself the effort if like mine you own the X5 40i M sport My2021. Cheers

Contrary, many others, including myself, have noted significant improvement in exhaust sound with flap permanently open (but it is, of course, not even close to a full exhaust overhaul, it would be silly to expect otherwise). If it didn't work as expected for you, it would be more prudent for you to question and investigate that rather than making an arrogant recommendation based on your rather limited experience. It's possible that there are changes in MY2021 or in recent software that have an effect. Or the comparative test environment is unlike most others (it may be a difference in engine or environment temperatures, or I'll note that sound improvement is more pronounced when starting and driving in Sport+ mode). A little humility is in order ...

Sorry if I offended anyone just sharing my experience with the whole thing did not quote anyone if it worked for you happy for you. Possible that it could be better with M performance or M cars. Yes agree little strongly worded but intention was to warn others like me who thought could get a slightly better sound out of this mod. Not stupid to expect custom exhaust sound out of this please don't take it personally sorry once again.
