How to Access the Roof Box?

This might be a dumb question, but how do you access these Roof Box? Bring a step ladder? Stand on the door stills? Can you slide the box towards one side to open and access? I'm not very tall, so for sure I need something to reach up there.

Thanks.

i picked up the OEM rails and 320 liter box this morning at my dealer and because the shop wanted > $350 for the install I said, ‘no thanks I’ll do it myself.’ Funny the money I saved on the parts service was trying to make up on the install. I don’t have or don’t see the marks where to install the rails on my 2020 X5, so does anyone have the measurements for where to install the forward and the rear rails?

I just ordered one of these after seeing a similar product posted on the forum. Sorry but I can't find that post.

Accessing the roof box is a little difficult without having a step ladder, or standing on the door sils. You can also stand on the rear tire. Also if you have air suspension, drop the car to load mode (Which I have forgotten at times )

That step for the door latch seems very interesting, I wonder how it affects the latch over-time? Very interested to hear some first-hand experiences of it.

Amazing how the OEM roof rails transform the X5 into an outdoor, adventure-ready car. If I could attach a picture without it coming out upside down I would.

Kayak Rack

Looking thru the past posts on this thread I chose the Thule Wingbar Evo. I needed the cross bars to stick over the side to accommodate the lifting kayak rack (also made by Thule). The X5 is just too tall to lift the boat up to a normal rack. The lifting mechanism has a shock strut that lifts 40 pounds of the boat weight.

I just got a Thule Motion XT box in XXL - the same as amus3d, just one size larger. Sharing photos here for others to compare in the future.

Hey all,

Can someone measure how much height is added with the BMW rails and Roof Box? Reason asking is I park underground and wondering if it will it work before I purchase. According to BMW, the roof box is about 410mm, but would like to get real life measurements.

I don't know about the BMW rails and box but my X5 with Thule Wingbar Evo bars and a Motion XT XXL box requires 7' 3" of clearance.

@Mr. Maboomba, I just got the Thule wingbar evo too as well, did u set it up using the default bmw crossbar location ? Which located slightly in front of the b pillar and c pillar ? I'm wondering if the location is correct or not. Should I use what Thule suggest?! Will u be able to let me know ur set up ? Thanks in advance and appreciate it ~

*thinking about getting the motion xt L maybe in mid January. Is xxl super big ?

We are lucky enough to have 8ft tall garage doors. Our X5 would not fit (or even be close) if we had standard 7ft doors.

For anyone with the Thule 53" crossbars and the 184023 fit kit, do you know what width the black plastic sliders are set to on your front and rear crossbars? When I originally bought my crossbars, they were for a Volvo and I don't know how much to adjust them in or out for the width of the X5.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the Thule website has a calculator for these measurements. Go to your rack and installation instructions.

I can't seem to find it anymore on their site as this fit kit is now discontinued.

Whoops--sorry--I didn't realize you were looking at an older rack. I'd just do a semi-loose mount and adjust it until it gives you a fit you like. I assume the old fit kit is suitable for this vehicle?

The latch is designed to hold the door in a major crash. It shouldn't be an issue with the design he has. The 'pull' is almost straight forward on the latch and the large triangular bearing spreads the 'push' load evenly over a reasonable area.

I have seen issues with cheaper versions that hang from the latch from a hook with the end of the tread pressing against the door jamb. With these, there is a small contact area which causes it to dent the jamb.
