No internet when on Carplay

Hey everyone:

I am able to connect to Carplay but my phone becomes useless meaning with no internet access to things like google etc. whenever carplay is active. it just keeps clocking but goes no where. I have to turn off my wifi on the phone to get the phone to browse the internet. Anyone else have this issue as well on the G05? Any fixes ?

It's most likely the phone trying to connect to the car's wifi and the wifi isn't active. You should be able to disable it in the CarPlay settings or just 'forget' the network from the phone.

Go to Mobile Devices and Settings. Turn off everything and ONLY turn on CarPlay. That should enable bluetooth and wifi (CarPlay uses both). If I am remembering correctly there is an "Internet" checkbox. You have to turn that off.

The reason you lose internet is because the car is trying to give your phone internet and if you don't have a hotspot subscription it won't work.

That would disable my phone from accessing the internet though wouldnt it?

If you are using hotspot from the car, yes.

If you HAVE hotspot subscription and your phone can't connect through the car's internet, then there is another issue.

Like I said before, turn off the "internet" option, that is the only way it will work. That internet toggle is to share the hotspot feature with the phone. You don't have hotspot and if that toggle is on, that is why your phone internet is not working. Mine works fine with WiFi and Bluetooth ON, but internet off.

Did you find a solution to this? I have the same problem and the above suggestion doesn’t work.

That is the only solution and it will work. Make sure your phone is not connected to the X5’s WiFi and that the Internet option is not turned on in iDrive. I would suggest removing your device from iDrive and the vehicle from the phone and re-pairing.

Depending on what iDrive version you have the wording/options may be a little different. I can post a pic of what it should look like in 07/2020.xx if needed.

I ran into this situation for the first time yesterday. I've had iOS 14 ever since it came out and I never really paid much attention to carplay because I only really just use it for music. But today I needed to use it for Apple Maps navigation and the navigation got stuck at one point trying to 'reroute' me. I opened my phone and saw I had no internet going to my phone via carplay. This was never an issue with iOS 13. I had to get the phone to 'forget' the BMW network for it to work.

Everything *seems* like it works as it should now, but I'm wondering if it's now re-routing my phone through bluetooth...

Edit: I just now un-paired and repaired my phone to idrive carplay. It seems to be working as it was in ios 13. My phone shows its connected to the BMW wifi, but I tested a few apps and the internet was working as it should on my phone while carplay was also active in the idrive screen.

When you pair the phone via Bluetooth you will be prompted to connect to WiFi as one of the last steps. Decline that option unless you have hotspot with internet access enabled. Otherwise, the WiFi connection will be to the BMW hotspot without internet capability. When you decline this option, the phone will use cell service as needed.

I'm experiencing this same issue. For me, what has happened is that I subscribed to the internet HotSpot plan for a trip my family was going on. When I did that my phone would connect to the BWM wifi for internet so the car created a new device just for that. So my cell phone has two devices in iDrive.
A wifi only and a carpaly version. Now the car thinks there's two devices connected "VTENGR-Cell" (used only for internet - only the wifi icon shows in device manager) and "VTENGR Cell" (used for CarPlay - phone, app and wifi icon in device manager). The problem is "VTENGR-Cell" is connected to wifi looking for data, so my phone can't get internet while it's connected. If "VTENGR Cell" connects first, than it's a non issue. No matter what I do I can't get rid of the "VTENGR-Cell" device. I guess the last resort would be removing my device from iDrive altogether but I don't want to do that if I don't have to.

edit: The "Internet WiFi" setting it not toggled in idrive - just the regular WiFi that you need to run CarPlay is toggled.

It could have originally been paired incorrectly. Remove the phone from iDrive and forget the connection on your phone and restart it. Then go through the pairing process again using bluetooth and allowing the CarPlay connection.

I did that a few times with the same result.

BUT - I figured it out (I think someone else pointed that out as well). I changed my iPhone’s name to say “Michael’s iPhone”. It appears BMW does not like that as it looks for just generic “iPhone” to connect to (and yes, I deleted all previously installed devices from the iDrive). After I changed iPHone’s name back to “iPhone”, all is well. I get CarPlay to come up as soon as I enter the car (wirelessly) and I am able to connect to the internet. The cellular indicator on infotainment’s screen in CarPlay mode now says “5G” whereas before it would display a WIFI icon. FWIW, I am on iOS 14.2

Exact same issue. Plus it gets even worse when you have two phones. I've noticed that forgetting the device on both car and iphone doesn't do full wipe. When I erased the "network settings" on the phone the entire enrollment was a breeze. There is definitely some either incompatibility issue or a bug because this shouldn't be a rocket science.

I was having this same issue on my 3 series. I’d tried deleting the phone pairing on the car and the car from the phone (Bluetooth, Wi-fi & CarPlay). I’d paired again several times but with no joy.

After reading this thread I tried again but this time after deleting the pairing I changed my iPhones name under Settings - General - About from “Steve iPhone XS Max” to “Steve iPhone XS”. I then went through the pairing process again and it worked!

As mentioned above, the first thing I noticed this time, was when it connected to CarPlay, the iPhone was showing the 4G icon this time and not the Wifi symbol.

When I have WiFi unchecked and left Bluetooth checked, android turn off.

I turned off my wifi on the phone and start Android auto in the car, it 1turns on the wifi on my phone and connects to the car.

Is there anyway I can use Android auto with bluetooth only? I want to connect my phone wifi to a different router device and NOT to the car.

Bluetooth doesn't have enough bandwidth to support CarPlay and likely it is the same with AA.
