I received my car in Dec 2023. When I hit 300 miles the engine light came on. First the service tech said it just needed a software update. It came on the second time after 900 miles, then went off after 2 days. The third time it came on with 1200 miles. My car has been at the dealer for 3 weeks now. Service tech said they needed to replace the battery module but it was replaced twice and now has a leak. Emailed BMW USA to request a new X5 50E. They assigned me a case manager today. BMW claimed there are not records of the engine light on being an issue for other owners. Hard to believe

I don't believe it has the HOLD function similar to my 45e battery level option but it will recharge from applying brakes and other kinetic energy return functions.

The 45e doesn't have Battery Hold but rather Battery Control. Battery Control allows you to set a percentage the battery should be charged to and held at. Battery Hold will keep the battery at the percentage it is at when the button is engaged. I think the XM has Battery Hold.

You may have better luck with your dealer. In my case, BMW agreed to buy back my 50e, but not make me whole for the tax difference on my trade, taking back an earlier goodwill payment, and lower incentives than when I originally bought. It would have cost me north of $6K to replace with a new 50e. The case manager seemed disinterested in getting me into another BMW.

I contacted the GM of the dealership and they worked with BMW to arrange a substitution of collateral, so when my new build arrives they’ll just swap out the VIN on the existing paperwork.

Wow, this thread is pretty horrifying to see. Have been researching the G60, considering it in 550e form to replace my existing G30 530e, when I came across this discussion.

We bought a 2024 X50e last Spring. Ended up with the CEL issue a couple of months after taking delivery and it spent 5 weeks in the shop waiting for the module to arrive from Germany (or so we were told). Reminded me that I had a catastrophic failure of the hybrid system in my G30 within the first year of ownership, and it spent well over a month in the shop because the powertrain was so new, they had no idea what to do with it.

Both cars have been trouble free since their early problems, and in the case of my G30, that will be 7 years in July.

Bottom line though, these BMW PHEVs are incredibly complex and obviously still having problems. Now that is is running again, I absolutely love the powertrain in our 50e, which is why I was so set on ordering a 550e once they are available (despite the fact that I find the new G60 flat out ugly). This thread is definitely making me rethink that -- really assumed they'd have this issue handled by now! Still, there's just nothing out there that comes close to the performance and flexibility of the B58 coupled with an electric motor. Volvo has similar base numbers but nowhere near the refinement. The new Mercedes E53 AMG looks amazing on paper, but it will probably be well over $100K USD and no more reliable than the BMW PHEV's.

Tough call, seeing just how many problems are still cropping up. Based on how much I enjoy the 50e despite the early issue -- and the long-term reliability of my 530e once repaired -- I'll probably roll the dice again....

I agree. I am now picking up my car from it's 3rd CEL (BMW XM hybrid battery coolant valve - same errors as 915M said) - only had the car 3 weeks. Mileage just at 1000. If this CEL comes up again then I'm def not getting a hybrid to replace. I already had one 45e fail on me. I'm actually lucky each time they had valves on hand. No wait period. But a 3 week old car has been in the shop 9 days almost 50%.

Side note: Anyone have any ideas how to get the real statistics on these CEL failures for the hybrids from BMWNA ? Just curious - I was a little cheeky and asked on the phone to my Rep, he just said "we don't have those."

Same for me two weeks ago, along with a software update to 03/2024.
Been two weeks now with no issues (knock on wood).

Bad news: someone hit it while it was parked legally on a street last night. You haven’t lived until you have uniformed officers walk into a restaurant calling your name during dinner. The driver fortunately had insurance. Left front control arm broken, air bladder for left front wheel shot, left side of car damaged almost full length, front bumper damaged, and who knows what else underneath. It was quite an adventure getting it onto a flatbed with one wheel cocked to the side. The insurance adjuster gets her first look tomorrow. Enterprise gave me a 2023 45e with real buttons! So begins the latest episode…….
Update: vehicle was totaled last week and my dealer was able to get a May allocation. Identical build with a week 22 build date. Hopefully, I won’t have to post in this thread after it arrives.

Update from the 3rd Time it has been in the shop. Most recently after the SME was replaced, 4 days after we picked it up from the dealer the check engine light is back on and they are sending another loaner out to pick this car up...

Absolutely ridiculous

Manger of the dealer called and said it is about time to explore getting us out of our car. This should be fun...

Stop wasting time and request a replacement directly with the dealer.

Been a couple weeks, but the yellow CEL came back on. 2 days later, it cleared again, but this time I insisted on bringing it in. Dealership ran some tests and said the SME triggered some faults, but cleared and so they updated to latest software and hoped that would fix it.

That said (and not sure if this is what others have heard) the Service manager said that BMW is hesitant to replace SME modules right now unless clearly a Hardware issue, and instead pushing for dealers to wait for a Software update that is supposed to come sometime in June for that component. Anyway, just sharing what I heard, but will bring it back in if CEL comes back.

I heard the same thing from my dealer about a software update to address this in June after my SME was replaced twice already.

CEL came on. 2nd time. First time it cleared on its own but dealer said it was overheated charging port. I don't see any driver train error. Looks like I'll call the dealer tomorrow.

Midnight sapphire ii 50e from October.

I would take it in and let them see what the stored codes say. Good luck and let us know.
