I wouldn't really have noticed this BUT, as you look across all the videos and images across the internet of the G05's rear seat, there are some big inconsistencies with some seats being perfectly flat and wrinkle-less and others looking more wrinkled than even the image above.

Exactly. Hard to call this intentional when you see that. And not a trivial matter, imo. Mine had better not look like that.

FWIW, here's how BMW "shows" the seats on their South African site (where you can still view the interior and exterior in 3d, unlike the US site!). No wrinkles or gathered stitching.

I've got to agree that whether it's intentional or not, if they represent their seats per the above image, then that's what buyers should expect.

Our F15 leather is wrinkle free though it was delivered with a defect in the rear center headrest that the selling dealer refused to rectify. We took delivery at the BMW Perfromamce Center and noted such defect in the survey afterwords. The service dept did not care, even with me having screen shots of the survey.

Just sloppy. Not up to BMW standards, particularly for an 80k - 100k vehicle.

Yes, that looks absolutely horrible. Simply inexcusable..

If the wrinkles were "intentional" they would match from one side of the same seat to the other and they don't. That's a defective seat and you should not accept a car like that. If the dealer says it will correct itself you should say you'll take delivery when the car is correct. That should not have left the factory, period.
I have an X5 on order with Merino leather and I will not take delivery if it looks like that.

Has anyone contacted BMWUSA and inquired with them as to why the rear seats are so inconsistent and wrinkly?

Thanks for your perspective. Certainly BMW would not let this pass QC unless it was designed this way. I guess I'm just not a fan of this "design". Usually I'm a big fan of BMW design but maye you're right and I was just looking for something to be mad about.

I took the time to research wrinkles-by-design in car seats and ran accross this BMW-sponsored paper. Interesting stuff.

Well that’s sorta the point. They don’t all look the same just because yours looks like one of the wrinkled ones. The configurator and the majority of posters’ pics do not show a wrinkled back seat. But, hey, if you like yours that way, you have no problem. Those who bought based on seeing non wrinkled seats in the ads and configurator will not be happy. Not sure why you’re trying to dismiss their valid concerns.

Regardless if it isn’t a screw up it’s a ridiculously sloppy looking leather for what could be configured to be a $100k vehicle. I know a lot of people on this board are very loyal to the brand, but this look is very hard to defend.

I was watching one of the youtube vids on the X5 reviews that the press did a few months back and one of those is pretty wrinkly also.

Uh, yeah, I got that. Jeesh. They are dismissing you because it obviously IS a screwup for all the reasons previously posted which you keep ignoring.

The difference between yours and the other one is that your wrinkles look pretty even side to side where the other one does not.

Defective Seats

It doesn't matter who you show these seats too. I cropped the photo to show one seat back to illustrate the problem. I don't know how anyone especially BMW could think that these wrinkles are ok. They might be if they were the same on both sides of the seat back but one side has quite a few more wrinkles than the other side making it look like a mess.

That’s why I suggest showing it to someone who knows different seat patterns.

I did look it up and found this paper where they talk about designing wrinkles and folds for leather car seats. Check it out.

Its pretty clear this is a polarizing topic. I get that some of the posters think its fine and we who don't like it don't know what we are talking about. We don't all have to agree.

I think the seats shown the photos in this post look like they were made by a group of sewing class students who ran out of time and had to finish in a hurry.

If you've got time, read the this paper. Its pretty interesting stuff.

This is leather "gathering" that some here are talking about. Notice the nice, smooth piece of leather on top. Below, it has been intentionally bunched up to create waves and pleats.

Clearly the BMW seat manufacturers were not intending to do this. If they were, with BMW-level quality and precision, the pleats would be obvious, intentional, symmetric, and in a repeating, planned pattern.

Gang,

As the new owner of a '19 X3 M40i, with black Vernasca, and a horseperson who knows leather better than most, and took delivery of my vehicle two months ago at the Performance Center...trust me, those wrinkles ARE flaws that should have never passed QC. This is my fifth BMW, starting back with my first in 1987, and never has any leather "supposed" to have wrinkles like that.

I was fortunate...my M40i had none, but another couple at the Performance Center picking up an X3 3.0 at the same time, had dimples and wrinkles and they were HOT about it. They noted the flaws on the paperwork and the BMW employee apologized over and over; told them to get with their dealer upon arrival home to "work it out". Honestly, I was prepared to refuse delivery had mine had that shoddy leatherwork. Thank God it didn't and I could drive it home.

First thing I'm doing is opening the back doors and looking that those damn seats. If it's wrinkly I'm kindly closing the door telling my CA call me when you get those seats fixed.
