Software upgrade at dealer fail! My car is down.

I took it to second dealer in town and they did oil change in 2 hrs compared to 4-5 days the other dealer mentioned. But the software upgrade failed. I got this message:

Worst case scenario happened during programming. The head unit crashed and we are having trouble getting it back up and running. Looks like we may need to get you back here and put you into a loaner car for the evening. BMW is performing a remote programming session now from New Jersey but it may not work and it probably will not even finish before end of business today.

Ouch! I'm awaiting a replacement head unit (mine is usable but has issues) and they indicated that it is coming from Germany and will take two weeks.

Oh no! Does that mean my car is stuck for two weeks?

I wouldn't panic just yet. I'd like to think they can salvage yours via BMW corporate magic (remote reprogramming). Will keep my fingers crossed for you!

I hate to be the bearer of (potential) bad news, but this happened to me back in January. They tried the NJ remote programming, but that didn't work.

They had it for a total of 3 weeks before replacing the "Kombi" and returning the fixed car to me. Originally they were going to make me wait for some software update with an ETA that was weeks out (like 6 weeks after the botched software update). I pursued unsuccessfully via corporate customer support channels and finally emailed an executive. After that, the car was fixed within 2 days (3 weeks after initially dropping the car off).

Good luck, and hopefully they figure something out for you.

The dealer is saying that they routinely encounter this problem and he said he will give you a loaner for the evening which sounded like they're going to fix it by tomorrow. Who knows maybe tomorrow they'll say day after tomorrow and will eventually lead to several weeks?! I am so pissed off with BMW dealers in Portland.

Well, hopefully they've found a faster solution since it happened to me back in January. I think it's entirely possible, so crossing my fingers for you

That sucks I hope they fix it quickly.

My '04 M3 had to have its brain physically sent to BMW HQ back in the day when some dealer upgrade failed, they sure have come a long way with remote upgrades. I did my first OTA upgrading the other day and it went smoothly but I thought for sure I'd have to have it towed to the dealership

Good luck

Since my Connected drive was not showing me that I was due for the new remote upgrade. I asked the dealer about it today and he said it can only be done by a dealer it cannot be done remotely. In hindsight, I should've waited for remote upgrade myself instead of letting dealer do it

Thank you all for the best wishes. If anyone believes in astrology, the effects of July mercury retrograde have started. Avoid car repairs, software upgrades or buying new electronic devices. Software upgrade of my Sony A7riii camera also failed today. My car had auto pdc malfunction and got paint defect at dealership while it was getting repaired at last mercury retrograde time in March.

Other than that, how's your ownership going? Gotta keep our sense of humor lest technology make us stark raving mad.

I thought that was the whole idea behind the OTA updates, so you could do it yourself and not have your dealership f it up.

Next time you get one in ConnectedDrive I'd do it myself if I were you. Mine went smoothly (scary as anything though with it all shut down and things flashing), while your dealership f'd it up. Professionals, go figure

I hope they get it fixed for you.

This is not unusual sadly. My wife had her 2019 X3 in two weeks ago. Same thing happened and SA said it isn’t unusual. Translation, BMW software update tools need work.

my connected drive app states last update happened at 08.56 am today. last night remote 3D was working. Right now Remote 3D was blocked by another function is the message I received. I was curious how remote 3D was not affected by the idrive system crash yesterday.
If the connected drive app got updated, idrive must be up and running?

That's great!! FYI, in answer to your question (and if anyone else cares), somehow I was still able to use ConnectedDrive and remote 3D view while my car was down with the botched software update.

Happened to me. Car took one extra day in the shop. It was a pain, but not the end of the world.

Got my car back. Latest software running. Couldn't tell much difference yet. Cornering lights working now.
This is their log regarding the software upgrade failure:
