Here's the e-mail I just sent to K&N:

Hello and good morning,

I am inquiring on the availability of intake filters for my vehicle: a 2020 BMW X5 M50i.

After looking on your website, it appears you have several filters available for the lower-end spectrum of the X5 lineup including the 25d, 30d, 40i, 45e, and you even have them for the X6 30d, and M50d.

Yet, you have no filters for the two highest performing models of 2020, and now beginning 2021: The X5 M50i, or the X5M (or the X6 variants of both, which would likely be the same). In fact, I "believe" the X5 M50i shares the exact same filter as the X5M, but I'm not 100% sure. The engine/intake layout appears to be identical.

Do you have any intentions of producing these filters? I've been a K&N customer for over 25 years, and this is the first time I've ever come across this issue. You guys are usually really good about having a filter ready, before the new models even hit the showroom floor. Meanwhile, the X5 and X6 M50i, and X5/X6M cars are coming up on 2 years old now.

Looking forward to your response. Thanks in advance!

I have had several emails already with them too. Multiple people asking is good.

I will warn you that they are slow to respond.

I also emailed BMC but haven't heard back yet.

K&N wrote me back this morning, said that they did not have filters for the M50i models, and asked me if I had the OEM part numbers, and if I'd be interested in being on their mailing list.

SMH. Really K&N? You're relying on customers to provide you with part numbers?? REALLY!?!?

I then went on to tell them that the intake systems in the X5M50i, X6M50i, X7M50i, X5M, and X6M.... are all identical.

I then (begrudgingly) gave them the OEM part numbers.

I then told them that they literally ignored both the full-M versions, and the M-Performance versions, of BMWs top 3 SUVs...... 5 total vehicles, that have been on the market for well over a year.

Now...... I'm irritated. K&N used to be one of the top producers of performance products, and were on the cutting edge of every new vehicle. Now they are behaving like some 2nd rate company that outsourced all their R&D and production to China...... and then replaced all their knowledgeable sales techs with high school dropouts from a local unemployment firm.

I almost hope another company comes out with filters first. After 25 years of using K&N, maybe it's time for a change.

Sorry. Rant over.

I think you are better off waiting to see what comes out for the X5M since the intake system looks identical. Typically aftermarket companies are more willing to come out with products for the M models first. To me i don't think swapping the filter panel is going to net you any results as traditional BMW's have very free flowing intake designs. I would only consider doing this if it offers a massive sound improvement which is only attainable from a cone style filter.

I had a Dinan intake on my F85 X5M and it was a sealed design. I got zero sound improvement. Did it offer any hp gains? maybe maybe not. When you have over 560hp you aren't going to notice such minor hp increase.

I would do a little research because we do have the charcoal filters on the M50i. The F10 M5 guys found legit horsepower being locked up in those. I will agree that a full intake system is not worth it as these seem to flow well, but filter replacement and charcoal removal is still worth it.

I am with you on the X5M intake. It looks exactly the same. That gives some more hope!

Yes the charcoal filters is probably worth some HP. I am going to remove mine when i have time to check if my F95 has it.

It would be nice to have a cone style filter installed simply for the amazing sounds that they produce. Don't really care if it doesn't offer any HP as long as it doesn't reduce power. I had a eventuri intake on my F80 M3 and it didn't produce anymore power but the sound alone was worth the money.

Us, EU-guys don't have the extra charcoal filter, but we have OPF instead

I hear you.... and agree. A K&N isn't going to net "huge" HP gains by any means.

My biggest motivation...... is dynotuning. My appointment is this Saturday. The last X5M50i that they tuned ended up with a 150hp increase, and a 100nM increase..... I had hoped that "maybe" the K&N would give me "just enough" to inch over the last guy.

Still..... going to be a huge gain. Very excited about it nevertheless. But from now on, I'll always wonder "I wonder if I'd had the K&Ns installed, if I would have had 10 more?"

Question, if the filters are the same size on both the M50i and the X5M are the ones on the X5M more free flowing as was the case I read on previous generations of the X5M.

We may not know that for awhile. I'd be interested to see if the part numbers are the same.

All I know, is that the intake systems "look" identical.

But..... they looked identical on the F85 50i and F85 X5M too.

I "believe" they use the same filter, but we won't know for sure until some aftermarket companies get off their ass and actually do some R&D.

To date though, there are no aftermarket HP filters for the X5 M50i, X6 M50i, X7 M50i, X5M, or X6M.... and I'm 99% sure they all use the same filter.

Nope..... not only did I buy the filters and try to physically install them (unsuccessfully).

I've also written them 3 times.

The first time they ignored me.

The 2nd time they responded, said they didn't offer the filter, and then THEY ASKED ME what the part numbers were for the filters.

The third time (about a month ago)..... I wrote them again, gave them the part numbers, and told them that they've managed to completely ignore the top 5 high performance BMW SUVs.... many of which have been on the road for over 2 years.

They ignored me again.

K&N used to be a good company.

Thank you for your time and dedication on this. I contacted them today and they basically told me they don't make one but they might have one for another motor that may work but could not confirm because it was not in there system. Oh well; I guess we wait for Dinan to get around to it.

Dinan, BMS, or "somebody else" will eventually make one for the X5/X6M.... which will translate to our cars. Waiting...... patiently.

My thoughts exactly. Now that these are hitting the streets and have some mileage on them perhaps someone could drive it over to them so they can get started. I am tempted to purchase a set of stock filters and ship them to K&N or BMC and have them use it as a template.
