No reason for you to keep this car
Tell them you want a buyback
They should pay you back everything you have paid for this car from day 1
You can then buy another BMW or switch brands

Well reviving this thread. My week and a half old X5 would not connect through the SOS button or idrive. Dealer had the car and did everything to fix it for three days to no avail. They ordered a new TCB from Germany and it will take 10 days or so to arrive. I decided to return the X5 loaner they gave me and drive my own X5 while waiting for the new part. When I picked it back up the SA told me to pick out anything I wanted in the showroom display cases. Well I got the $274 dollar Msport watch for free! Anyway everything works in the car except the SOS function. They also put the March software up in as well.

In addition no error message shows up in the screen.

Getting the Emergency Call System Malfunction

Just bought a 2019 X5 40i about 2 months ago, and
the Emergency call System Malfunction alert came on.
All the idrive fucntions work fine and I even tested the SOS 2 times, and it worked fine.
It has been like this for 2 weeks. The BMW SA thinks it's a software issue or a bad module in the headliner. He said they just had one with that issue.

I really don't want them messing with the car, after reading the some of the stories.

Is there a way to just delete the error? And I am assuming it will come back immediate?

You are best served to have the issue addressed. In my case, the dealer finally resolved the issue and, for now at least, we are driving the happy trails.

Just got the "Emergency Call System Malfunction" yesterday and it won't go away even with iDrive reboots. This was the next day after going through a carwash, which seems to coincide with water getting into the shark fin being the culprit.

Guess its to the dealer it goes...

According to my dealer the battery in these modules goes out all the time. I just had to have the module replaced and the battery in the new module was dead. Everything works great now however he said that he cannot count how many modules have had a bad battery

Just happened to me. Same error message. Everything seems to be working for now, except Voice Commands (steering wheel button) and Siri on Carplay cannot hear me.

Around a month ago, I was driving in very heavy rain and water was dripping onto my lap from the microphone point above my head. Could not believe it. It went to the dealer back then to check for leaks but none were found (obviously). Now this.

What is the advice here? I'm skeptical about changing any electrical units if they will only get replaced again shortly after. Has anyone got to the root of this issue? Has there been any word from BMW?

I have had one problem after another with this car.

I just brought mine in today for same issue. The symptoms vary but sometimes navigation is way off, voice commands don't work etc

Same Issue here

Build May 2019

Doesn't look like corrosion or water breach though, just failure of the TCU module in the shark fin.

GPS is out of whack
No BMW connected drive
No traffic alerts
No internet resources ie news weather or updates
BMW assistant is very cut down
The map content is lean

Aside from that, the only gripe I have about driving this car is the speed limits :-) man its so tempting to throw this thing into every corner I approach at insane speed

Purchased a CPO 2019 X5 40i.

Got this same "Emergency Call System Malfunction" warning a few weeks ago. Took the car for service and the TCB part is backordered until April.

What is the best reasonable course of action?

My X5 has had this emergency call system unavailable message up. March 2019 build. Tried I drive reset and phone pairing and repairing as recommended in some posts to no avail. Took it to the dealer who have said corrosion in the fin is the blame and the inside elements need replacing. 1 week wait for parts and Bmw want to see pictures of sealant around the fin. The funny thing is I had an oil change 2 weeks ago and due to COVID they cleaned the car in the car wash not the standard valet and the fault started on the drive back from the garage. So I’m thinking the bmw dealer actually caused the issue in their car wash! They said this was a known issue on x5 now whatever that means.

Hi everyone,
There is a way to code it out.. I’ll test it soon.
Though I’m not sure how it’s going to effect the communication.. hope it doesn’t except deactivating the emergency calls..

Another thing to note.. is the the message itself..
malfunction is different from “not available”

I got this warning a few times during my early AM commute driving out of my subdivision. I was too sleepy to test the system to see if everything was working.

The only thing knew was the recent OTA firmware update to 3/2021.50.

I don't believe the WiFi Hotspot needs to be activated for map or idrive updates.

Same story this morning. I used the SOS while the message was visible driving on the turnpike and they said take vehicle to dealer.

Sorry to post glossographia, but my local SA called to explain what they did to resolve my error messages and apparently he was trying to compete with Bezo's flight to the edge of space.

All I got in my notes was something about a battery (?) or whatever in the sunroof after seeing SOS fault codes. No hardware issue was confirmed. Also, they saw no link to the recent OTA firmware update which they dismissed as only about entertainment software and nothing related to safety.

emergency call system malfunction

2019 X5

brought the vehicle to dealership for the 4th time. Water leaking in through the sharkfin. This results in losing GPS, carplay, and now voice commands. This is extremely frustrating because the dealer in Northwest Indiana seems to have no idea on how to solve the problem, in spite of this issue being very prevalent across BMW forums. This should definitely be a recall but so far BMW refuses to address properly. I am losing faith rapidly in BMW. A company that prides itself on quality certainly isn't living up to the billing. I would be interested to hear if anyone actually experienced a dealership fixing the problem permanently? If so, what was the final fix? Right now every time it rains I know there will be an issue.

My wifes X1 has sos malfunction on when the temps get below 45 degrees F. Then it fixed itself when the temps start coming back up. Dangest thing I have ever seen.

We have a maintenance coming due so I will have them look at it. What is going on with all these leaks. I read other threads where it leaks from the roof line and other places.. This is not normal.
