Parts were $850 for the two front windows. In retrospect, I would go with a 3rd party installer and pay $200-350 to replace the windows, so $1050-1200 all together. I put the original windows on Craigslist for 100 each.

4mm is quite thick! Is that just the film thickness?

Its not mm, its mils which is a thousandths of an inch so 4 mil = .004 inches whereas 4mm = 0.15748 inches

LOL, there was a time back a few decades ago where there was a push for the US to switch to metric, oh how I wish they had done so, its so much easier. However, there was sooo much opposition to it that the idea was dropped.

I remember being a co-op in school working on a job site. In school everything was metric, out on the job site, everything was english units. The job I was working on, the plans were prepared in metric - I remember the superintendent coming up to me with his tape measure and said - please show me where 600mm is on my tape? Then went over to the grader and he said, please show me where 50cm is on this machine .... at that point I realized why there was such a huge opposition to switching to metric. Literally ever piece of construction/manufacturing equipment would have to be retrofitted for the change. I could only imagine the cost of doing all of that.

Got soft-close doors?
If not, ever thought of killing two birds with one stone by he dealer?

Of all the options that were dropped (acoustic glass, soft close doors, heated/cooled cupholders, electric luggage compartment cover, air suspension) from 2019 to 2021, I think acoustic glass is the biggest loss for me. I like quiet cars and the 2021 X5 is definitely nosier (at least compared to the Genesis G90 I had before). I would love to get acoustic glass installed, but I am afraid they will damage something, or create some rattles or creaks from taking apart the door panels etc...which would annoy me to no end.

It never occurred to me that you could replace the standard glass with acoustic glass! I love these forums!! It is definitely a premium but I will certainly consider it when I eventually get a crack in the windshield.

Would it be worth it to only replace the windshield with acoustic glass? Or would there still be tons of noise from the side windows, defeating the purpose of the acoustic windshield?

Also, does the factory acoustic glass option also include the second row?

I believe the Windshield is already acoustic glass. The option and this thread is about the side windows.

Right, the windshield is already a laminated safety glass which is why it won't shatter into a million pieces upon impact. Its the side windows, both front and rear that were in the acoustic glass option. That said, its just the side power windows that go up and down, not the little side fixed pane windows behind those and not the rear hatch window or sunroof.

.

I thought we posted a correction to the info that Genius gave you but maybe it was lost. They were incorrect regarding the fixed side windows on the rear door, those do get acoustic glass.

Mine is in for an oil change but will check, the other side rear windows may also be acoustic.

TurtleBoy, good memory...I looked back though my files and searched the forums and the Genius group originally said "all four side windows" were acoustic when ordering the option. The confusion came when trying to figure out exactly which four they were referring to because if you look at the side of an X5, there are in fact four glass windows (driver power window, back seat power window, back seat fixed-to-the-door window and rear most fixed window which is actually in the cargo area but alas, all four are on the same side of the car.

However, this would mean that there are eight separate panes of acoustic glass on the combined right and left side of the car. Seems like a lot for the money so back then we believed they meant that the four acoustic windows are actually the four power windows only, two for the front doors and two for the rear doors and that the four fixed panes were not acoustic, nor was the rear hatch window or sunroof.

However, as we all know, this came from the Genius group at BMW and it took three attempts to get the info and they had to go search for it themselves - so,,,,,just saying

This conversation goes back to Jan 2019 and I see my emails to the Genius group were from June to Aug 2019. The early 2019 orders I believe got it for $150 when the G05 was just released and it was just for the two front power windows but then it went to $300 but you still only had the front two power windows that were acoustic and then later when the price went to $600 all four powered side windows were acoustic, I believe that happened for the 2020 model year. The Genius group's final answer on June 4, 2019 was that "The Acoustic Glass covers the four windows able to move up and down.” So basically they are saying what I uploaded as a pic in my last post.

You have them, right? Check yours to see what you find, I believe you will be looking for the XI designation just above the circle with an E in it but it might depend on who the glass supplier was. The power windows are easy to see when looking down onto the top of the glass but the fixed windows you’d have to find the markings that mean acoustic.

Still not sure why they no longer offer that option

Actually I took mine in today to have an oil change and some warranty work. I did find posts that said they there are 6 windows included in the option, this was verified by another poster for MY20s and by me for the MY19s. Actually I see you were part of the thread. Here it is:

Yeah, I looked at that post today, must have missed where it said there were six. So then its the main four powered windows and the two small fixed on the rear doors?

Yes, that is correct. Hopefully the option comes back next year because it does make a difference.

Yeah, I'll say, they have removed several of the options I want and will not order without. Ok, how's this pic - correct?

I don't know if the car I test drove had acoustic windows or not. I have ordered an M50i and obviously will not be getting the acoustic windows since they are unavailable here in the US. I do not think my 2014 535i has them, I'm not sure they were even a thing back then. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if the noise is an issue when I pick up my new rig. I do a lot of conference calls from my car and people have often commented that they didn't even realize I was driving. I'm hoping the same will hold true on the M50i. If not I'll be looking at aftermarket options. Aside from having BMW install their acoustic glass at a seemingly high price from what I am seeing on this thread is anyone aware on any other sound dampening options?

I heard some ceramic window coating applications would do it
