I enjoyed reading Audi's technical training document for their engines and this one is fairly similar. I didn't see this in the pinned technical training documents thread either.

While I'm not too familiar with BMW's engine history, from what I understand this version marks a pretty significant change versus the previous version. Notably the cylinder liner has changed to a plasma arc weld among other notable changes. I know--from reputation alone--how bad some of the earlier versions of this engine were, but from what I've read and understand, a lot of the changes directly address some of those concerns.
