Poor wet traction?

Recently took the m50i with stock 22 oem tires through some rain; it was not confidence inspiring; def lost some grip and hydroplaned a few times; I’m not talking a heavy rainfall either; anyone else have grip issues with the stock Conti summer tires? I usually find Contis to be solid but now thinking of a new set

Well it depends how far you were pushing it to be honest. Even with the highest rated tire you're bound to hydroplane or lose grip at some point.

You must have been mashing the throttle hard as my M50i on 22's sticks to the road like glue in the wet. Was saying only yesterday that I can hammer it now in scenarios where my M4 would have killed me behaving the same.

How many miles do you have the tires? Under 500 miles?

New tires should be driven a few hundred miles on dry roads to rid the tread of parting agents and antioxidants applied during production. When tires are cured, a release lubricant is applied to prevent the tires from sticking to the mold. By driving on the tires for a few hundred miles, these lubricants will wear off and allow the tire components to begin working together.

I'd go with the Michelin PS4S over Conti if you're considering a change. I've never been a fan of Continental tires in general tbh. Have the PS4S on my F95 X5M Competition and they're excellent in the wet. I've also had them on previous vehicles and I was always confident in both wet and dry performance.

The premium contact 6 were rated about 6th in the wet with auto express. There is a video on you tube comparing wet handling down to 0,C and the con tis were much better than nearly all the winter tyres on test. In snow it was obviously very different, but the con tis are normally quite good.

It's because BMW chooses such a wide tire, especially in the rear. Wider tires are just more prone to hydroplaning because there is more surface area of the tire contact patch, which means there is more water that has to be displaced (and hence, more prone to hydroplaning).

I took a delivery of my G05 with 8mi on the odometer at BMW Performance Center Delivery (PCD) in Spartanburg. It was pouring down rain on the day of delivery and torrential in some spots on the drive home. Though I opted for the 20" A/S - won the tire lottery with Pirelli Scorpion Zero, I could sense the new tires loosing traction intermittently. It was sensible to drop my cruising speed (65-75mph) to speed limit or under during those down pours.

Also as other forum members have mentioned above, the combination of high speed, new tires and wider rear contact patch will contribute to the uneasy sensation of hydroplaning.

Go easy and safe driving!

If the road has pour drainage no tire matters too....

Not meaning to offend, but bullcrap. I had tires just as wide on my 911 c4s and it was immovable in the wet. It was on rails in even torrential rain. So while wider wheels have a larger contact patch, proper tire design gets the water out of the way.

I think it more likely that the tires aren’t worn in or that BMW did not choose tires that deal well with wet weather.

Frenetic is correct, wider tyres are more prone to aquaplaning - fact

To a certain minor degree, never had issues in my F15s, F86s all had 315 rear and 275 front, especially in 'em F86s, excessive high speed in rain, no issues at all

More likely to be the road surface than the tires. Sometimes the very worst traction is light rain on a road that’s been dry for a bit. Brings all the oil to the surface.
