Driving Assistance Professional and Highway Assistance versus Supercruise?

I am in the process of helping my parents choose their next car. They are currently looking between the Cadillac XT6 and the 2024 X5. They like the idea of Cadillac’s supercruise, but prefer the large screen of the 2024 X5. The determining factor between the two cars might be the semi autonomous driving capabilities of each car. My parents are older, and the idea of driving at night makes them nervous, so I’m looking for technology that will help them be the most comfortable behind the wheel at any point in the day.

Any thoughts as to which technology is superior or are they very similar?

Thanks!

After 1600 interstate miles in SC, VA, NC, TN, and KY not once has HA shown up.

Not sure where BMW has mapped but Super cruise claims 400k miles.

Wow thats odd. I drove from NJ to Toronto and back, and about 90% of the route I used highways assist on my 760

Im coming from an XT5 to the X5 and can't speak for the XT6 but probably similar. The Cadillac rides more like a Car and the X5 more SUV like. Its higher up which I really like and the technology is leaps ahead of the Cadillac in my opinion. I have the Drivers assistance pro package but haven't found a road yet that allows me full autonomous driving but think you should be more concerned about the accident avoidance capability of the X5 which seems superior. Also, how much longer is the XT6 going to be around and overall long term value. GM is no longer committed to ICE's and is going full electric and that is why I am moving on from them.

OK, thank you very much. That is helpful. I have no experience with Cadillac at all.

You also have to make sure the LED warning lights on the steering wheel are enabled for HA to be available.

Where is this setting found? I know my caution lights on the steering wheel work as they come on quite often telling me to pay attention or place hand back on wheel. I also live in SC and would think I 95 would be included but apparently not.

This is a BMW forum and you are going to get BMW as the best - most likely. Consumer Reports did a test and found Ford and GM were the best. That folks here would say, BMW tech is ‘far ahead’ of Cadillac should be an indicator….I think X5 is a better SUV. I agree with the comment that the Cadillac XT6 drives more like a car than an SUV.

Thanks, great points. It’s hard to find any direct comparisons between any of the systems. They all tend to do the same thing, just some better than others.

And of course no dealerships have these cars in stock so we can’t test drive them…

I would think I95 qualifies. You can check using the map:

i have owned many SUV's. i would say the X5 drives nothing like a SUV, if it did my wife and I wouldn't have owned 5 over the years. My previous X5M and my current X5 M50i drive like sport sedans, in my opinion, even my wife's current 40i. i am currently waiting to order a new M60i. Thanks.

The driving assistant in BMW is amazing. I use it all the time in Canada. One time I was driving at night on the highway (express toll) which was dark and the car on my left lane didn't pay attention and was going to hit me on the side, the car immediately forced the steering to move a little to the right and peep me an alert with red car displayed on my dashboard and prevented the accident. I had to horn that driver to wake him up. All that happened in matter of seconds.

Also, I use the traffic jam assistant when driving to Toronto and it's amazing how it stops and driving by itself which gives me a lot of rest.

I would have a hard time believing I95 isn't included.

I know I26 and I85 in SC is.

Not sure about the rest of 95, but from exit 33 to exit 63 is not. I can use highway assistance but not pro.

This part drives me nuts when I use HA. It kind of defeats the purpose of being hands off. When you look to side even slightly (like looking at the center screen), it complains and asks to look straight to the road. It is too sensitive

But you should look at the break down of the scores for the Consumer Reports test.

For me, the only part which concerns me is the "Capabilities and Performance". In this area, BMW's score is 9/10 and Cadillac 8/10.
So yes, BMW is ahead here. Mercedes actually tops this category with a perfect 10/10.

I don't care about other areas like Ease of use, Clear when safe to use, Keeping drivers engaged etc which drags BMW's score down.

8/10 vs 9/10 is not far ahead. Clearly, most people I know would care about ease of use, especially if you’re buying for elder parents as the OP said. As an SUV I would take an X5 over an XT6. But Cadillac has very comfortable seats and
excellent tech. Might be a good choice if you prioritize that over driving dynamics.
