Please tell me this is a known BMW/Apple quirk and not something major

Just got our g05 last night, and while I love it, there's one quirk that's annoying me to no end:

the right side of controls on the steering wheel has a scroll wheel that lets you select the next or previous music track you're playing. this information shows up on the heads up display. It has worked perfectly for years on our f15. on the g05, it works SOMETIMES. I have no clue what or why its like this.

whenever I push in the scroll wheel, it shows me and allows me to scroll the songs but when I try to select it, it'll either work, or not work at all. Sometimes it works if I select a new song at the beginning or end of another song. But if i'm in the middle of a song and I try to select a new song it wont work. the left right arrow buttons on the right side of the steering wheel work every single time to select the previous or next track, but navigating like that is dumb and it's like flying blind.

The scroll wheel works perfectly for scrolling through radio presets so there's nothing mechanically wrong with the button as far as I can tell.

I've had this happen in the car play screen, as well as the idrive screen that's mirroring carplay. I have an iphone X with apple music but I mostly play music that's stored on my phone itself (we just got apple music and i have an extensive flac library that I was using previously). Is that the issue maybe?

I'm running iOS 13.3.1

please tell me this is a quirk that can be fixed or there's a workaround. please don't make me involve the geniuses, or worse, the dealer. help!

EDIT: the problem seems to be isolated to large playlists of 75+ songs or more. if you just tell siri to play an album or artist, it seems to work as it should, so there's that.

i experienced the exact same issue with iOS 13.1 but it went away after update to iOS 13.2.1 or iOS 13.3.1

surprised you are seeing this issue with iOS 13.3.1

It's an iOS issue. I've experienced the exact same thing in my 440i.

thank god its not BMW then. I just went out and I had an old first gen ipod touch that I stuck into the USB slot by the cupholders with whatever iOS software they shipped it with. Worked perfectly. so that confirms the fact that it's not the mechanical wheel itself but something on my phone.

btw I'm not one of those jailbreak fools. my phone is stock iOS. its not running a beta either. My mom has a XS; i haven't yet set up her profile or car yet since its only a day old but I always update her phone to the latest iOS build whenever they release a new version so perhaps I should see if the same issue occurs with hers or not. idk what I should do here but im open to suggestions.

Indeed, I had it with a previous IOS version in my F25, fixed with IOS update.

I find that on the X5 the scroll wheel does not work at all except for relatively small playlists. It just says “Please Wait.” This is consistent with my iPhone via CarPlay, Bluetooth or an iPod Touch that is plugged in and across every version of iOS that has been out there since we got this X5 in November 2018. In comparison, this works perfectly on my 2018 540 with iDrive 6.

has anyone seen how the system behaves if you load the music directly onto the built in hard drive?

also since we're on this topic, is there a way to shortcut switching between the idrive audio system and carplay? I tried various combinations to assign it to one of my buttons but havent had any luck yet

The real issue is that iDrive 7 sucks in every possible way.

I have many albums and a few thousand songs loaded onto the hard drive and it works very well.

There isn't a way to set up a button to go to the general CarPlay menu but you can set it up to go to the Media in CarPlay. Hit the Media button for iDrive and scroll down to Apple CarPlay. Once that is highlighted, press and hold the button you want to assign as the shortcut and it wil be saved. I have one set up so when I press it I get to PodCasts.

I tried loading music on to the hard drive and for whatever reason it would only see a portion of my library. Strangely, every time I reformatted the drive and tried to do it again it would see different parts of the library than before, but never all of it. Quite annoying. Any ideas there?

Now that you mentioned this, this is exactly what is currently happening. If I tell siri to play an artist, it'll compile a list of songs and play them and i can easily scroll through and select whatever song I want. But it struggles to let me select my 'top 75 most played' playlist. That's stupid but thank you for pointing this out so I can at least still tell siri to play what I want. hopefully Tim Apple or BMW whoever is responsible will fix this with future OTA or iOS updates.

So last night I got into the car and took it on 4 short trips. On the last trip, I tried to resume playback in CarPlay and while the audio worked, I was unable to get the songs to even display on the HUD when I pushed the scroll wheel. It just said "carplay loading media' or something like that. I then switched to the radio and switched back hoping that would clear the glitch (this has happened to be rarely in the F15) but it didn't. It also wouldnt show what the song and album that was playing in the idrive screen. It only showed all of this in CarPlay and that's it, there was no way to control it further.

I get that this is some sort of quirk with iOS most likely, so when this happens how do I reset or fix it? Do I need to disconnect and reconnect CarPlay? or are certain apps on my phone interfering with it (like Plex)?

Thereef -

The scroll wheel has never worked for me with an iOS device and iDrive 7, unless it is a relatively small (100 or less, I think) playlist. Otherwise, it is that please wait message.

I am hoping this gets fixed at some point. It is definitely a BMW issue, since it does the same with iPhones and iPods Touch for me whether connected by wire, bluetooth or CarPlay.

Interestingly, the scrolling DOES work on the old iPod Classic, but that device is terribly unstable with the car otherwise (regular resets, repeat turns on automatically, etc).

Scrolling works with music saved to the hard drive or on a USB thumb drive, but again, in that case it is only seeing a fraction of my library.

Quite frustrating that something that works perfectly on my iDrive 6 BMW is so buggy on iDrive 7.

it is definitely finicky. it'll work fine for me and then inexplicably it'll say please wait or throw up some other type of error, until I exit the car or it somehow resets. I wish we could come up with a proper reset procedure, I'd prefer this not happen on a long road trip.

I remember I ran into similar issues when I got the F15, but eventually I figured out how to get it to work without making idrive upset and it has been relatively stable ever since.

No, it's a BMW issue. We have have 4 different iPhones (different models, different IOS versions), and two other different brands of car, and the CarPlay issues *only* happen on a BMW. It's galling to find our "cheap as chips" 3rd car has more reliable CarPlay than our G05 - and was free.

The new G05 is generally more stable than the G30 we had, but still not without it's moments and quirks. Android connects seamlessly every time though.

now on iOS 13.4. I think it's fixed now? The last couple of days I've been able to skip around on my playlists containing a large number of songs directly from the scroll wheel. Anyone else confirm?

edit: tested it extensively today on a couple of trips to the grocery store and it seems to be working now as it should on iOS 13.4
