Mac is more of an OS than a brand in this case. Brands at different price points have their strength's and weaknesses. I suggest different brands for different purposes. They all have their uses, you just need to play them to your needs. I sell A LOT of hardware from every brand imaginable. There are definitely differences. Like a last poster said, just down to how a trackpad is on a certain make/model can make you choose a different system.

Good questions for the OP in general though. Those are all important for us to know what is really best for you as an individual. 3) is difficult. Searching by "aluminum frame" is something that I have been asked to do in the past. Huge PITA lol
Agreed it really is a PITA, anything Aluminum would be out of his price range anyway.

I agree with your posts as well if he's not really tech savvy and if he'd be using it for basic outlook, browsing and streaming. He can prob hold off till November and pic up a refurb laptop running sandy/ivybridge for 300-400 plus a 850 evo SSD for around ~120 well within his budget.

That 980M has got to have something decent for an output. I know it defeats the purpose a bit, but buy a decent monitor and connect?

All of my outputs are DP. Just think that most of what I buy ends up being business/monitor expectations instead of homeline/TV.

I bought the Samsung for it's response time ( http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/ju7500 ). I got it for pretty much what a 4k monitor goes for (Asus ROG) and I needed the extra tv, so it was easier to bring into the house without the wife getting mad haha

HMU if you ever have any questions. I love this stuff =)
Thanks bro. I never tried to hook it up to a monitor using the HDMI out. The 980M is good but the g-sync maxes out at 75hz. I can adjust it more but it gets all wonky after. The ROG is the ultimate monitor I would eventually want but I'm not sure if it's going to work well with the laptop output.

+1 850 Evo is the best thing you can do for performance for your dollar. A 1TB is going to cost OP ~$300 and needs to be knowledgeable enough to reinstall windows, or easier just clone

Also if he really needs the space for docs or files he can swap the cd drive for an extra HD slot and put in a 1 TB HD as extra built in storage.

Or get one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017DH3O5A/

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Gaming-in-4K.141718.0.html

Claims GTA V at 41 fps, BF4 at 35 when both cranked at 4k =(

IDK if MSI tweaked yours at all, but still expecting 60fps would be a real stretch even using afterburner to crank it.

You can bring performance up by lowering graphic intensive items that you don't care as much about. Really depends on the game and options. Nobody likes to hear "lower settings" on a gaming rig tho =(

Sorry for going off topic OP haha

I have the vbios changed to +150core +300 mem. Temps seem to be holding at 86-87C.

HAHHA yea sorry OP we went on a tangent. Don't get a MAC period. Check slickdeals they have some good deals at times on budget laptops.

OP, I'm currently looking at the X1 Carbon and T460s. Both are small and powerful. Loaded up they're around $1,800 though and I'm not sure where you're at with budget. I prefer Linux so I have no opinion on the OS shipped.

You should probably look at a different solution for hard drive storage though. Maybe a NAS. I would rather have a 500 GB SSD than a 1TB traditional drive.

$600 budget. With $1800 + NAS (synology with ssd cache ftw or SAN) we'd have a ton of options!

I think we gave him a few good options around the budget and with what he was looking for. Seagate Slim USB 3.0 2TB will run him $80-90 for external that he can carry, and if using a backup, no need for RAID NAS, etc at this level. (Sold a SICK set of SQL Servers with RAID 60 SAS-Drives last month)

1TB SSD was going to eat half his budget (or quarter for a 500GB) if he was comfortable with cloning + swapping drives.

Positive experience with X1 Carbon here. Use mostly for Excel, Python (nothing crazy in Py; I'm a noob) - not much else. Wish I got the i7 because it can get a bit hung up when working with a lot of data. Only other thing is an intermittent issue with screen flickering. Seems to only happen when battery is low - and it seems to be a rather prevalent issue. If you keep it plugged in, no sweat.

I switched to ASUS after using Sony Vaio and Toshiba , and almost top models for these brands . ASUS X750 Series has proven to be the best notebook I have ever used . Even when battery started to degrading I notice no sudden shut downs as I experienced in the Toshiba notebook .

Looks like it's going to be Lenovo or HP. I've got it narrowed down to a few
Lenovo Yoga 710
Lenovo Ideapad 510 or 700
Lenovo Flex 4 (15")
HP Omen 15t or 17t
HP Pavilion 17t
HP Pavilion x360 Convertible

Having a hard time picking one. Touch screen is nice, but don't really care at this point if something has everything except for that.
Backlit keyboard is a must
Obviously, I'm looking at 15" or 17" screen @ 1920x1080 & 8 GB RAM
Has to have an HDMI port. Would be nice if it has a MiniDP as well.
Looks like the i5 6200 is about the same as the i7 6500 so I don't care which one it has.

Hey there OrangeZ06... long time lurker, very infrequent poster, but figured I'd weigh in here as I just helped a buddy find a reasonable deal on a new notebook. You might want to look at this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...direct-20&th=1

Comes in under budget and already has the SSD, which I recommend like many others here. I have five PCs at home (three notebooks, an all-in-one and a desktop) for the family and have retrofitted SSDs in all of them if they didn't already have it. It's the single best thing you can do for performance. You get more battery life too...

I have a Lenovo Y50-70 and my wife has an HP x360, though without the backlit keyboard (got the i5, 8GB, 128GB SSD for $350-ish I think, couldn't pass it up). I think you need to get the Envy model for the backlit keyboard... There's nothing wrong with any of your options but this Acer also gets you another upgrade that most of those, at <$600 wont have. Discrete graphics. Yeah... it's *just* the 940MX but it's better than the integrated graphics and the CUDA comes in handy if you're ripping movies, light gaming, etc.

One other notable feature that will address an issue others have brought up about the SSD is... where do you put all your music, movies, etc. since you're limited on space with the SSD, compared to a conventional drive? Since the SSD in this model is an mSATA unit, vs a 2.5" notebook SSD, there's an open space in the notebook for a conventional 2.5" drive. You could add a 2TB drive for "content", keeping the SSD for the OS and apps. $75-ish, probably... You don't have to hook up an external USB drive, or retrofit an SSD, or swap out the DVD for another drive bay. So you'd end up with the SSD for performance and the conventional drive for storage, without giving up your DVD.

That Acer is not a touch screen... probably helping them hit that price point. One miss there but you said that wasn't critical.

I don't know where in PA you are but... and CL can test your faith in humanity but... there's a Lenovo Y50-70, like mine on the Pittsburgh CL but a later model with more RAM, a bigger SSD and 4GB on the 960M vs 2GB, like mine. "Asking" $500 but he's a seemingly honest seller as he notes that it has a screen flickering issue. This is a *COMMON* problem with this model and often resolved with a BIOS and or driver/update. Usually it's limited to the integrated Intel graphics, since the Y50 has both integrated and discrete. If it's not that... it's a loose ribbon cable connection. Should be an easy fix. Quad-core i7 4720hq, 16GB, 512GB SSD, 4GB 960M. I thought about picking it up just to replace my daughters 3-4 year old Toshiba.

Anyways... I didn't really look up specs and features on the various models you listed. I may if I have time while I'm watching F1 practice here... I usually watch sites like techbargains.com and CL for "deals" Maybe woot. Also... it doesn't hurt to check the open-box, floor-model section at like... Best Buy. As a rule, they don't have the best deals but you can get deals on that shelf. My Lenovo was on that "open box" shelf. They had all open-box/floor-models marked down the typical amount, then one weekend they had another 20% off... made it like $785-ish. I grabbed the manager and asked if he'd take $700 for it. Sure, no problem. Score. Those and refurbs can *sometimes* be a great deal.

Somewhat unrelated, speaking of the rare CL transaction that goes well and is a great buy... Picked up a set of 18" Type 177s with Blizzaks for winter for $500. Bought new at the dealer and only used two winters. Guy was straight up, on time when we met, wheels and tires were as advertised. He listed them for $600, OBO... I offered $500. He agreed. Done. I'm thinking he had probably close to $2K in this winter setup since he got them at the dealer, brand new, at msrp.

Anyways... My approach is never to pick models first... I just watch for the best deals within a price range and I'm pretty brand agnostic. You seem flexible on the screen size and form factor (regular notebook vs 2-in-1) which helps keep your options open.

Just grabbed a t460s. Customized before adding to cart for SSD, back-lit keyboard, and a lot of other upgrades. I got it with the least amount of memory though and ordered upgrade mem from amazon and saved around $150.

So far it's running linux flawlessly, it's small, light, fast, and smells nice.

I'm happy.

Several good choices out there. The only thing I would add it get a solid state hard drive SSD.

I just got the Dell XPS 13 with touch screen and I love it. Dell makes a 15" XPS but it may be a bit pricey compared to the laptops you listed. Instead of HDMI, think about getting a laptop with Thunderbolt™ 3. It includes HDMI but also has other ports that might be useful to you.

Have fun!

Refurb high end lenovos. Tons of them out there as they are still the corporate favourite. My preferred line is the T400S series, I think the latest is a T460S.

Slim enough, light enough, no bullshit, built rock solid and enough juice for every day needs. Still have the best keyboards and of course the clitoris shits all over any other track pad design by miles and miles.
