It's why I think we should re-institute conscription, but not make it only for the military, because I understand that many folks may not be able or have a desire to actually fight wars.

But a mandatory 12 months in some form of government service (paid, of course) where they go overseas and help these countries build wells, kids learn to read, etc. would really go a long way in installing some values in the youth of today and really help them understand just how good it is to live in this country - or western democracies in general.

Agreed. I don't know if that would change the mentality of tearing everything down in the west that provides stability though. I heard a very interesting commentary on the radio this morning. The guy is a conservative who has worked Talk Radio in the US (Chicago, South Carolina and Texas) and Canada. Was talking about the discourse now and I think he hit the nail on the head.

I'm attaching a link to this, the part I'm talking about is the first minute or so, his opening comments before he goes into his panel discussion.

Sorry man - I can't listen to that at work. Not sure if you have a transcript or something I can read.

Would be awesome to see some photos from "STAN" countries of Central Asia (especially my home country Kazakhstan if you have any. If memory serves me right, you mentioned that you spent some time there?)

On the other hand, I'm glad we live in a country that gives us vast freedom on how we spend our time or how we enrich our lives. From a policy standpoint, I also don't want a whiz-bang kid who's researching the cure for cancer to have to "waste" a year or two of his/her life working for the government abroad. So then we're talking about who gets exceptions ...

Yup - I can dig those up - although those are much more recent, so just some 'tourist' style photos - not any of the more dramatic stuff like these. I'll post some in a little while.

That is a valid point - although I don't think 12 months is unreasonable.

Saw a person with Proteus syndrome (elephant man disease) today. Apparently this young lady also has cancer, aged 20 or so. I felt terrible. Good to see she had a large support system.

I also thank god for my family when I see parents with kids with Down syndrome. As tough as we had it at times, things could have been worse.
I feel so bad for those parents.

Some yut wrote a bit of a paper that is going slowly viral. She's complaining about the new Crew, and several other politicians who are complaining how her generation hasn't seen properity, so we should go communist.

She's sitting in a coffee shop, freely associating with whomever she pleases, on her iPhone, ordering from Amazon that will be delivered tomorrow, as cars whiz by out the window and people walk by on the sidewalk.

A far cry from those images above. . .

Agree, it might counteract some of the horrible progressive (though actually regressive and totalitarian) anti-American and anti-success indoctrination they're receiving in the education systems. Teachers and professors should have to do a stint too; maybe they'd throttle-back on the BS a bit.

Agreed - traveling to all of these countries really helped put life in perspective. I struggle to understand the logic behind so many of these policies that most of the current democrat presidential candidates seem to espouse.

Not supposed to make you feel guilty - just appreciative of what we all have.

Here are some more of Bosnia during my lovely time there.
