Do you guys prefer this, or something else...like paddle shifters or switching to Manual mode? Really hope I don’t screw anything up using this!
I came across this M4 video, FF to @10.25, and I wonder if this is available in the x5 (I'm away so can't try it)

Basically he did a kickdown then downshift once. It will switch to the lowest appropriate gear.

eagle_bmw ...that's one of the better explanations of it. It's just a subtle difference from downshifting via paddles/manual mode. I think the advantage is for people who drive in Adaptive. Yes, the vehicle adjusts based off the conditions, but using the kick down feature is a lazy man's way of blasting past traffic. I really like it on merging and passing.

I think I may have worded this post to seem like is was magic and hidden. Nope. Just another way to get the most out of the vehicle without paddle shifting or going into manual mode. Once again, the vehicle will typically be "smarter" than the driver when it comes to certain things. I should've prefaced the post for all my peeps rocking the Adaptive life-style. Now, it BMW would just let me start up in Adaptive and turn off ASS without coding...I would be in heaven.

I think really the benefit of kickdown switches over using the paddles is that kickdown causes a shift to the lowest gear possible.

Example of cruising in 7th or 8th gear at maybe 40 mph (not sure how fast you have to cruise to be in 8th) and you suddenly want to pass someone or get to speed quickly. Kickdown switch would drop it to second gear straight away, while paddles would require you to shift down sequentially through all the gears before you get to the lowest possible gear.

Oh, did they remove/change some of the paddles behavior compared to what they do in the F15?

Thanks. This is good to know. I'd be interesting to try it with different modes to compare responses.

For continuous manual mode it looks like the x5 has the same behavior as the M4 video that I posted, at least based on the driver's manual. I have to try this as well 😃

That's interesting.. I'll have to try that.

Seems a little redundant to pull the paddle when you're probably gonna floor it anyway and hit the kickdown switch which accomplishes the same thing. Not sure why that doesn't work in the M car in the video posted above.

If you're in manual shift mode, in the upper gears (7 or 8) the kickdown switch wont' automatically downshift. At least that's my understanding from watching the demo on the M4 in the video above. Kickdown will only downshift if you're in automatic mode.

bottom right hand corner of the gauge cluster wills how what mode you're in.

do you happen to remember how to enable that on-screen notification that pops up whenever you switch driving modes? I remember I disabled it but I don't remember which menu it was disabled in

Are you talking about the center infotainment screen? I didn't even know you could disable it! I'm going to look into that and see.

you can definitely disable it and I did so in our F15 because I was sick of the car broadcasting my driving mode to any passenger. I'm pretty sure I disabled it on the G05 as well, but I'm still fumbling my way around all the menus they have in this one.

Keep me posted because I get annoyed by the animation and was just recently wondering if there's a way to disable it. I just flipped through idrive just now to look for a setting but couldn't find one.

Found it: Car -> Settings -> General Settings -> Pop-ups -> Driver Experience Control (enable/disable)

I enabled it for now, but I just found where it says "comfort" in the instrument cluster and I'll be sure to check that every time I drive and make sure it's set to adaptive so I may go back and disable the pop up for the main iDrive screen because I think its tacky to broadcast it like that.

on another note, this passage here seems to suggest we can set a driving mode and assign it to our profile and it'll stay like that?

Thanks! That's the first place I looked, but I must of glanced over that since it was the very first option.

The individual modes get saved to your profile, but they don't get set to a default. These are if you want to customize the configurations for SPORT and ECO modes. Both of those modes have an Individual option where you can tweak the throttle response, suspension, steering, etc.

The only way to change the default start mode is via coding. Apparently Bimmercode's new iOS version that has yet to be released will allow this. Currently the only way is via Esys using a Token.

Correct, only on auto mode. I just tried in both comfort and adaptive and both works with just a kickdown.

I also tried it in manual mode, as per the manual I posted above. I was moving at 50 mph, set to M8, kickdown and immediately pull the left paddle shifter and it switched to M2. Put a smile to my face 😁

Adaptive should be the default! Also, let me turn off ASS without coding! How can it be good for your car when it shuts off then on when I’m trying to pull into a spot or at a stop sign for 5 seconds. The person who developed this concept for the automobile world should be punched square in the nuts.

I agree with Adaptive being the default - not sure why they don't allow you to choose - thank god ECO is not the default!!

WRT ASS - My last car did not have it, when I would get loaners, I hated it. When I took my X5 home, I left it on and said to myself if I still hate it after a month, then I'll turn it off. A month later, I don't hardly notice it anymore.

It’s part of my pre-space launch sequence...lock doors, turn on adaptive, turn off ASS, then prepare for take off.

you can set ASS to off in the F15 and it'll stay that way, idk why they reverted it back to on as default in this new iteration. there should at least be a 3 second gap after you stop before ASS kicks in or some pop up option for you to disable ASS for a while (a long line of cars at a 4 way stop; light about to change to green). I like the concept but it could be implemented a lot better than it currently is. Right now ASS mostly stresses me out.

why do you lock the doors? You can set it to lock and unlock automatically after the cars moving at like 5mph or something
