Hmm, is it possible to use WIRED carplay?

Really not the biggest fan of carplay and hate how my phone auto connects to idrive with wireless carplay all the time.

Is there a way to have carplay only activate when I plug in my phone?

Do you use the vehicle's wifi hotspot for other devices? If not, why not just disable the wifi hotspot? You can assign that toggle to a hot key. If only bluetooth is available, I presume phone would only connect to idrive and carplay would not be enabled. I was thinking about the same thing but haven't tried it yet.

The HotSpot is not used for CarPlay, the WiFi connection is. That said you could toggle to the WiFi on and off but all that would do is either allow or keep the phone from connecting. It will not connect by Bluetooth if it was set up to connect by CarPlay. When setting up device you have to select what type of connection it will have.

I guess I'm not following why either of you would not want it to connect to CarPlay all of the time. What are you trying to accomplish/avoid?

So with carplay connected all the time, anytime I am browsing something on my phone that has sound, my car will disconnect from XM and go into car play to play that sound momentarily. I then have to manually choose Sirius XM again in the media menu, but first, I have to fully back out of carplay or the media button will just go to the music section of carplay.

Oh okay, I don't ever remember experiencing that but rarely browse anything while connected to the vehicle.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the term "hotspot." But what I was trying to suggest is to not let the phone connect to the car via wifi as my understanding is that carplay requires the wifi connection. So no wifi connection, no carplay. I was hoping that the bluetooth connection would allow phone to still connect to idrive, even if you selected 'carplay' as the connection mode.

I would love to have things set up to initiate carplay only on a wired connection. Then I could start it only when I want it without having to fool with the settings. I prefer idrive for most situations. One reason is the ability to receive full length text messages (after coding). I never send texts when driving.

Agree one of the reasons why I still have my Android phone is the ability to have my text messages received in full after coding and they can be read to me if i choose. I wish I could also do this with my emails like I can still do in my old F15 that has iDrive 6. BMW must think people don't use email anymore! I also have second phone (an iPhone to do Carplay Apps). iDrive Apps like Spotify Life 360 no longer work here in Australia

This is indeed an annoying "quirk" with the wireless carplay. It assumes all audio on the phone wants to be projected over the speakers. When in reality, that's not the case at all.
