Apparently I am owning my last BMW! There is no way in Hades that I would ever drive a car that looked like that.

This is it, I'm done. I don't care how well it drives, or quickly it performs. I'm going to Mercedes. I've never been so angry at a car design, because I was soooo looking forward to this car. I don't mean to be over-dramatic or everything but this ugly car pretty much ruined the next few years (in a car sense) for me.
What's a good alternative? C63? Alfa? Literally anything?

I'm still holding on to the hope we are all being trolled...
I've been sporting a Macan GTS since my F80 lease ended, with the plan to get the G80 when it came out. Perhaps time for a new plan.... -X- |

I think it would be wise of BMW to officially unveil the car pretty much now to give people enough time to get their fingers out of their ears while shouting hate it, hate it, hate it!!! before the press driving impressions and official launch comes around. This way more people will be able to absorb the driving impressions and specs...

..agreed, has a Dravit Grey 440i look to it... I like how the headlight does not meet the kidneys, small bit relative to the huge design shift here but makes the front end strong.

..amazing how sharp the concept looks with the hood-line meeting the grille. It appears to be manufacturing constraints but they swung it on the 8 series... I wonder what is different about 8 series and 4/3 production?

Looks stunning. This is how I dreamed this car would look from the start and it's better than I imagined. Good going!

Ok enough of the "F80 Values going up" talk.
No matter how bad the new one is, and it certainly appears to be very bad, F80 values will continue to fall. With love - owner of a quickly depreciating F80 |

The reason for this is because the M cars are supposed to be epitome of performance and sportiness for a given BMW line. Since coupes are considered sportier and more performance oriented, even the sedan M cars adopt the coupe's front end. It is a distinctive feature that I appreciate and would like for BMW to continue doing.

No, I think bmw trolling. How can it be such a departure from the g series? Bmw never does that. Anything can happen but it doesn't make sense to totally Change front on the G80. Effectively having 2 front ends for g series. The tooling costs alone are high. Doesn't seem profitable.

I don't understand where it all went so wrong.
Long post from a long time lurker, seldom poster.
I am on the cusp of getting my first from new BMW. I adored my E46 and my E90, and my choices are coming down to the M-lite M340i (despite auto), the brilliant all rounder 540i, and the attainable dream car the M3. The unattainable for now dream car, the M5, would be the pinnacle. That list is now G20 M340i and G30 540i. I want to agree with the posters that would be satisfied with the driver's car improvements and the final M3 with a stickshift because I agree that it sounds like a recipe made in heaven, a true one-car-does-it-all, from the street, to the track, to the commute, and for the family hauling. I just can't. I own cars for 10 years. I can't justify to myself spending $80,000 on a car that I can't park and glance back with a grin as I walk away. I can't have a car that I would be ashamed to hide away for fear of "what would the neighbors think?" I foresee that for those that stay and don't get a new M3 or M4 but still need 4 doors, they will gravitate towards the X3M and the X4M if price is a factor, and up to the M5 Competition if it is not. I also see a strong possibility that tuning an M340i to M3 levels will become more commonplace. Answering my own question, I have one answer: the competition. BMW no longer makes the only ultimate driving machine. Mercedes AMG and AMG-lite products are nearly as good as BMW's. By playing the price game, BMW leapt into Porsche's space, and I feel many dissatisfied with the new grilles will go to Caymans or 911s. I'm not going away just yet, my love affair with BMW which started with my first glance of an Alpine White E39 M5 and was sealed with my first drive in an E30 325i is still here. But in 10 years time? I don't know. There is still time to either right the ship or swim away before she sinks. Lastly, to all who represent the manufacturer and are listening. BMW, remember that loyalty built upon strong brand foundations keeps leasers and buyers coming back for more. Tread upon that loyalty, and you will forever lose the guaranteed sale of so many like me. Pursuing a strategy to grow the brand with new sales in the short term while forsaking loyalists in the long term is madness and will lead to ruin over the long haul. There are only so many people who can afford these cars in the world...

I am a die hard BMW fan. Always was ever since I was a little boy gawking at old E30 M3's or 635csi on the road. I've had 7 BMW's now and it wasn't even a question (until recently) what my next car brand would be after this one. For the first time I find myself looking over a the dark side as my next car replacement more than ever due to this radical design change from BMW.

My thoughts echo everyone else here. I was really hoping the M3 production version would have toned down smaller grills than the concept. Big disappointment.
All I can say is that I'm sooooo happy I snagged a 2018 M3 in the last few months of production. Was initially worried about a new version coming out right around the corner. Thank the car gods I didn't wait for this model!!!!! Going to keep the F80 at a minimum now until the G80 M3 LCI and hope that BMW shrinks the grills on the LCI refresh. If they don't I'm going to keep driving the F80 until it dies and then move on to another non-obnoxious in your face ugly design. |
