That reduced usable capacity would explain why the charging times are quoted as 4 hours for 0-80% and 5.3 for 0-100% in the US, and 5 and 7 hours respectively for Europe

Thanks! So my comments are more curiosity than anything - just never thought about it before.
So £3.20 for 40 miles?
I'm currently getting 36mpg in my 30d and Costco is currently (I think) £1.03 per litre, so I make that roughly £5.19 to do the same trip (my math may be completely wrong - very long day!).
Closer than I thought, though not really thought about it in detail, and savings wouldn't be my main driver. I guess if your work provides a charging station that could be an increasingly useful perk!

Equally, I presume there will be lower mpg for when you have to use the petrol engine so perhaps there are instances where it will cost you more than a diesel.

You should look at Octopus Go if you're charging overnight.
I'm not there yet, but when my 45e is delivered, I'll be seeing if I can get a SMETS2 meter.

5p/kwh for 4 hours a night. If you have solar/batteries, Ocotpus Agile may be worth looking at too.

*I'm nothing to do with Octopus.. just working out whats the cheapest method to charge the batteries!*

I have EDF's electric car tariff at 11p/kWh.

If you have a smart meter it's 8p for 9 hours overnight, 16p daytime. But for some reason they won't install one for me.

Have an allocation on order. My SA is allowing me to equip one how I want it so I can test drive it (with the hopes I buy of course).

Battery life in hybrid mode

From the press release:
"The 6-cylinder engine produces 282 horsepower and comes mated to a synchronous traction electric motor, which churns out an additional 111 hp, resulting in a combined power output of 389 hp. "

If you are driving in hybrid mode, could the battery "run out" so that you are left with a maximum of 282 hp?

Technically maybe yes. In practice no. The HV has a large capacity. And it always keeps a minimum charge to have e-boost. If you accelerate a lot with low battery it might not be able to charge enough in theory. If you then put it in sport it will charge faster and the problem is solved.

In my 40e I felt the difference when driving with low battery level. With the 45e I haven't felt that. Better battery management? Bigger battery? I didn't have to drive with a nearly empty HV battery.

For sure, the ratings are a mess, but this means that the US version definitely has less all electric range. For reference, 17.06 kWh would imply a WLTP of 33-43.
Why on earth does the US spec get 4kWh less than Europe? Why does BMWNA keep shitting over this car? do they not want people to buy it? They removed B&W speakers and soft closing doors.

I also thought the 30miles range was because EPA was too pessimistic but now it makes sense.

European owners who have had their 45e over this past winter:

When well below freezing is there a temperature at which the vehicle will not operate in pure electric mode? Perhaps less than 10 F or -12 C etc?

I purchased this vehicle in the USA on Sept 11. It was known the hybrid battery had a defect in some of the 2021 cars. The dealer assured me the car I was ordering was not one of them. Unfortunately, she was wrong. I took my car back to the dealer on October 14 and there it sits. I want a replacement which is being refused "at this time".

However the few short days I drove the car were remarkable. I got all the bells & whistles. The car literally drives itself. You must maintain nearly a constant finger on the steering wheel but it took me from Las Vegas to LA with very little intervention on my part. The ride was amazing. I only drove in town 1/4 of a tank of gas before I couldn't charge the car anymore [due to the battery recall) but I had gotten nearly 300 miles on that 1/4 tank. Gas mileage is amazing if you charge it each night.

the EU-spec 45e has a 42 to 54-mile EV range, which is excellent for a SAV of this weight (heavier but longer range than the RAV4)! for reasons unknown, the US-spec's usable capacity is software locked at a lower level than its EU brethren, so the 30-mile EV range is only seen in the US market, but not because it's not capable; BMW just needs to unlock the lower limit

**doesn't your 40e have a 14-mile EV range, which is much less than the newer 45e? 30 EV miles (US market) is still a big improvement.
